AJ Styles may be retired, but apparently there is still one match capable of getting him to put the gear back on. Months after ending his in-ring career against GUNTHER at the Royal Rumble, Styles revealed that he would consider coming out of retirement to wrestle alongside his sons. There’s just one catch: don’t expect him to do it simply for the sake of having the match.
Speaking on The AJ Styles Show, Styles was reminded of something he’d previously said about everyone getting one opportunity to come back after retiring. That’s when the conversation turned toward what could actually make him use his. His sons might be the answer.
“Uh, but how long is it going to take my son or sons to get in the position where I’m able to do this this show with them that matters? If it doesn’t matter, like I I’m be honest with you, I’m probably not going to come back for an indie show. I mean, even if it’s the wrestle with my boys, I probably not do want to do that.”
So simply putting AJ Styles and his sons in the same ring isn’t enough. Styles wants the match to mean something. If his sons eventually reach a point in their own careers where teaming with their father belongs on a major show, that’s when things could get interesting. Until then, he’s perfectly happy standing in their corner.
“I don’t mind being a special guest and like a manager kind of thing, but if if I do come back, hopefully I’m not 60 and it’s it’s on a big show. I would definitely let who wouldn’t what father wouldn’t want to come back and tag with his sons. Um so I don’t know if that opportunity will come because it depends how long it’s going to take him.”
That “hopefully I’m not 60” part might be doing some heavy lifting. Styles retired after decades of putting his body through just about everything professional wrestling could throw at it, and the thought of rebuilding himself for another match doesn’t exactly have him racing toward the treadmill.And he knows exactly which part is going to hurt.
“And and I’ll tell you this, the the idea of getting back into ring shape, you know, you know. So, yeah, that that kind of scares me. Yeah, but it’s just it to get into the ring shape that you know that you’re capable of needing to do it. That’s going to suck. So, the older I the older I get, the less cardio I have. I’ve realized that I don’t run anymore. I walk because that’s what old people do.”
That’s probably the biggest obstacle standing between Styles and that one final match. The desire is there. What father wouldn’t want to tag with his sons? But Styles isn’t interested in coming out of retirement for a novelty match on an independent show, and he definitely isn’t pretending getting his body ready again would be easy.
His sons would have to get far enough for the match to matter. AJ would have to get himself back into wrestling shape. And preferably, everybody figures this out before he’s 60.
