AEW’s Strategy for Mercedes Mone in Title vs Title Match at 2024 Forbidden Door

Mercedes Mone was interrupted on the May 29th edition of Dynamite when CMLL star and current NJPW Strong champion Stephanie Vaquer stole her thunder, seemingly setting up a bout for Forbidden Door. The match was then confirmed on Dynamite this week and it appears there’s more significance to the match than initially thought.

During the June 5 edition of AEW Dynamite, it was announced that Mercedes Mone and Stephanie Vaquer would go head-to-head in a highly anticipated “Title for Title” match at Forbidden Door as Mone and Vaquer will put their respective TBS Title and NJPW Strong Title on the line. This revelation added an extra layer of excitement and anticipation to the event.

While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that Mercedes Mone is set to receive the NJPW Strong Championship, a title that was made specifically for her. Originally intended to be the IWGP title holder, circumstances shifted due to the upcoming release of a movie associated with Stardom.

As a result, Stardom desired Mercedes to hold the IWGP title during the film’s release. Despite her initial involvement, Mercedes ultimately did not win the IWGP title and instead was earmarked to win the New Japan Strong title. Unfortunately, her plans were derailed when she sustained an injury, preventing her from clinching victory in the tournament.

“So I guess Mercedes is going to get the belt that was originally made just for her that she never ended up winning. The New Japan Strong title. Originally she was going to be the winner of the IWGP title. What happened was the Stardom, because of the movie that’s coming out very soon, they wanted her to be IWPG champion at the time of the movie. Mercedes actually did drop that title and they created the New Japan Strong title for Mercedes and she was supposed to win that tournament but she broke her ankle or foot or whatever and didn’t win it.”

We will have to wait and see whether the CEO of AEW will end up becoming a double champion in the end, as that would mean she can finally compete in NJPW again, which is a very desirable outcome for many fans.
