Nigel McGuinness was supposed to challenge for the ROH Pure Championship this Friday. Apparently, that match isn’t happening anymore.
According to PWInsider, McGuinness has been pulled from ROH Death Before Dishonor and will no longer challenge Lee Moriarty for the Pure Championship at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia. There’s already a replacement being lined up too. The report states that either Wheeler Yuta or Katsuyori Shibata will step in to face Moriarty instead.
The timing is certainly interesting considering what AEW has been doing with McGuinness on television.
McGuinness defeated Shibata in the opening round of the AEW Continental Challenge Cup, but suffered a foot injury as part of the storyline. He still returned for his quarterfinal match against Hechicero on the August 19 episode of Dynamite, wrestling with his boot noticeably taped up and managing to advance with another victory.
Now, just two days before he was supposed to wrestle Moriarty for the ROH Pure Championship, McGuinness is reportedly off the pay-per-view altogether.
PWInsider did not specify whether the change is connected to a legitimate injury or another reason, so there’s no confirmation yet on exactly why McGuinness was removed.
Either way, Lee Moriarty is apparently getting a completely different challenger in Philadelphia. It’s down to Yuta or Shibata, while McGuinness’ planned Pure Championship match is off.
