AEW Shelved Plans for Elimination Chamber-Style Match

AEW’s new Clockwork Carnage match wasn’t originally the mystery stipulation the company had been working on. According to a new backstage report, AEW had an entirely different multi-person concept in development for well over a year before ultimately going in another direction.

Speaking during a Self Made Session, Self Made Pro revealed that the previously discussed mystery stipulation was actually a six-person elimination match with rules that closely resembled WWE’s Elimination Chamber.

“The gimmick match that was previously discussed for AEW was a six-person elimination match. The way it was explained to me or framed to me was it was going to have rules very close to the Elimination Chamber.”

According to Self Made Pro, AEW also considered adding some type of physical structure around the match. However, those plans reportedly changed several times during development, and the company was never able to settle on a final version.

“That previous match, at one point in the planning, was going to have some kind of structure, and then at one point it no longer had the structure, but they never were fully able to nail that down.”

The idea had been in the works for quite some time. Self Made Pro said he’d been hearing about the mystery match for over a year and a half, and AEW had even planned to use it at one of its previous Double or Nothing events after building multiple wrestlers around the world title picture.

“If you’ve been following Self-Made for some time, you’d know that I’ve been very actively pointing out that they have been planning a multi-person stipulation match for over a year and a half now.”

“There was a Double or Nothing that they wanted to do a multi-person match for, and just things never really fully came to be this year to get that match when they wanted to, even though they had set it up on TV with a bunch of wrestlers orbiting the title scene.”

While AEW ultimately went with Clockwork Carnage for this year’s WrestleDream, Self Made Pro says the original concept hasn’t been thrown away. It’s simply on hold for now.

“Ultimately, they still have not done that match. That match is still shelved and tabled for right now. This is a separate thing.”

This is not the gimmick match that was previously discussed. That one, like I said, I can now tell you that it was going to have rules similar to an Elimination Chamber match. So, there you go.”

So while Clockwork Carnage is getting all the attention heading into WrestleDream, it may not be the last new gimmick match AEW has in store. If the original concept is still sitting in the company’s back pocket, it could end up debuting whenever the timing finally makes sense.
