Aubrey Edwards went from AEW referee to champion on Saturday night—but the celebration barely had time to start. She won the ATTACK! 24/7 Championship and then immediately gave it up.
The moment took place at Mystery Wrestling on August 29, when Edwards unexpectedly challenged comedian Ron Funches for the title. She didn’t exactly follow the rulebook either, punching Funches below the belt before covering him for the three-count.
Edwards officially became the new ATTACK! 24/7 Champion, but her reign was over almost as quickly as it began. She grabbed a microphone after the match and made it clear that she had no plans to start wrestling, “I am not a wrestler.” Edwards then vacated the championship, saving herself from spending AEW All In weekend watching her back under the title’s 24/7 rules.
The longtime referee has been with AEW since its inaugural year and has officiated several of the company’s biggest matches. She was also the referee when Chris Jericho defeated Hangman Page at AEW All Out 2019 to become the first AEW World Champion. Edwards may not consider herself a wrestler, but she can now say she won a championship—and surrendered it—on the same night.
