Matt Sydal has been missing from AEW for a long time, but it sounds like that might finally be changing.
Sydal last wrestled on the May 22, 2024 episode of AEW Dynamite, where he lost to Konosuke Takeshita. After that, he basically vanished from AEW TV, leaving fans wondering what happened to him. Turns out, Sydal was dealing with something way bigger than just sitting around waiting for creative.
During a Q&A, PWInsider’s Mike Johnson said Sydal took time off to finally get foot surgery from an old motorcycle wreck. That injury had apparently been messing with him in the ring for years and causing constant pain.
“Sydal took time off to finally have a much needed foot surgery stemming from a motorcycle wreck years ago that greatly hampered his work in the ring and led to constant pain.”
That explains a lot. Sydal has already had bad luck with injuries before, including a knee injury in 2022 that kept him out for months. But this foot issue sounds like something he had been dragging around for a long time. The good news? AEW may not be done with him, as the company has discussed him returning in the near future.
“We are told there’s been talk of late about him returning to the AEW ring in the near future.”
So, Sydal’s absence wasn’t just some random disappearance. He was getting his body right after years of pain, and now there’s apparently at least some talk of bringing him back. Bottom line, Matt Sydal has been off AEW TV because of a long-needed foot surgery, but if the latest word is right, his comeback might finally be getting close.
