Will Ospreay vs. Kenny Omega wasn’t always locked in as the main event of AEW All In. With Wembley Stadium waiting on August 30, Ospreay has now confirmed AEW discussed going in different directions before ultimately settling on the match with Omega.
While speaking to TV Insider, the Aerial Assassin was asked about the different possibilities AEW considered for All In, including matches involving MJF or Jon Moxley and even the possibility of a multi-man match. Ospreay confirmed those conversations happened.
“There were definitely discussions that it could go into different directions. But I feel like the natural and the right choice was to go with myself and Kenny because we’ve been preaching to the world that this is where the best wrestle.”
For Ospreay, the appeal goes beyond their current storyline. He considers himself and Omega two of the wrestlers who have helped shape the in-ring style of the last decade, with their influence now showing up in a younger generation.
“Myself and Kenny are two of the most influential wrestlers in the last decade. I’ve seen it in terms of our matches, and in terms of, like, the people that have followed in our footsteps. I can see guys like Callum Newman and Nick Wayne. People who took inspiration from Kenny.”
Ospreay also sees this year’s All In main event as having a different identity from the matches that previously closed AEW’s biggest show. He pointed to MJF vs. Adam Cole as a story driven heavily by humor and their relationship, Bryan Danielson vs. Swerve Strickland as Danielson’s attempt to finally reach the top of AEW, and Hangman Page’s pursuit of Jon Moxley and the AEW World Championship.
“To be able to put on an All In main event like that. You look at all the All In main events. You look at the MJF and Adam Cole match. That was kind of more humorous leading in than a sporting contest. It was more to engage the audience a certain way rather than a full sports contest. It served its purpose.
Then it was the crowning of the greatest wrestlers who ever did it, Bryan Danielson against Swerve Strickland, and the story that they told there. Then it was the guts and the drive from Hangman Page to try and strip away Moxley’s briefcase to reveal the AEW World Championship. This match, to me, two of the greatest wrestlers of this generation going head-to-head and finally finding out which one is the best.”
There’s certainly enough bad blood to get them there. Ospreay and Omega have been going after each other for weeks, and Omega took things another step on Dynamite by turning on Ospreay ahead of their Wembley showdown.
AEW apparently had other pieces it could have moved into the All In main event, including MJF and Moxley. Instead, the company went with Ospreay and Omega—and Ospreay believes Wembley is getting the match that makes the most sense. Now they just have to settle which one of them really is the best.
