Jerry “The King” Lawler has had a legendary career in WWE but he almost lost his life during a 2012 episode of Monday Night Raw. While he obviously survived, it appears the medical bill for this whole ordeal was just ridiculous.

While speaking to Busted Open Radio, Jerry Lawler talked about suffering a cardiac arrest during the September 10, 2012 edition of Raw. He said he doesn’t remember it at all. Michael Cole told him later that it looked like Lawler was snoring, but then he suddenly fell onto the announce table.

Lawler said what really happened was that Lawler’s heart stopped beating. Luckily, there was a doctor at ringside who quickly rushed him to the hospital and got his heart working again. He said it wasn’t a heart attack, his heart just stopped. Once they got it beating again, he felt fine right away.

“I don’t remember it because Michael Cole said he thought I was snoring, and he looked over and I was just falling out onto the announce table. I didn’t know anything. What happened was my heart stopped beating, and luckily the doctor was right there at ringside. They rushed me to the hospital and got my heart beating again.

It wasn’t a heart attack—it was just that my heart stopped beating. And once they got it back on the right track, I was back well again right away.”

The WWE Hall of Famer stayed in a Canadian hospital for a few days after the incident. He joked about the myth of free healthcare in Canada, saying he was billed $20,000 for his stay there but fortunately, WWE covered the cost.

“But they kept me in the hospital for a few days in Canada. Free healthcare you’re supposed to get in Canada—that’s a big lie. They sent me a bill for $20,000. Yes, WWE paid [the bill].”

Lawler did suffer a stroke a couple of years ago but he is feeling much better now even though he does have to deal with lingering issues from the stroke. Lawler’s close call on WWE Raw was a serious reminder of how fast things can change, even during a live show. He’s much better now and continues to inspire fans all over the world and that’s all that matters in the end.
