Tonight’s WWE Backlash airing May 10, 2025, promises an action-packed night live from the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The show sees Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena defend his title against “The Viper” Randy Orton. Plus, Pat McAfee takes on “The Ring General” GUNTHER in a Singles Match.

The Countdown To WWE Backlash Pre-Show opens up with Michael Cole welcoming us and he says the attendance will be over 16,000. Cole then narrates various arrival and backstage shots and he introduces his pre-show panel co-hosts Wade Barrett and Big E. They then run through the card for tonight’s PLE.
Byron Saxton then talks about John Cena and Randy Orton as well as their history. Saxton recalls John Cena being booed at ECW One Night Stand in 2006. Saxton then says Cena expects hostility tonight in Randy Orton’s hometown.
Peter Rosenberg then talks about Randy Orton from the parking area, then turns things over to Jackie Redmond, who is backstage. Redmond says GUNTHER has never lost two singles matches in a row, even going back to his NXT days. The panel then discusses the match between John Cena and Randy Orton.
We then get a video package looking at the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship Match between Becky Lynch vs. reigning WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyria.
Jackie Redmond then talks about Becky Lynch.
Byron Saxton is with Lyra Valkyria. Saxton asks Valkyria about what she is dealing with tonight. Valkyria says there is so much going on in her head and she has to deal with the embarrassment about what Lynch fed her and how she still wanted to defend Lynch. Valkyria then says Lynch turned on her and did Lynch think she would go back to Ireland. Valkyria then says Lynch underestimates her. Valkyria then says she will show that she was never a stepping stone. Valkyria then says Lynch will be the crowning list of people she has beaten as Intercontinental Champion.
Vic Joseph then joins the panel to talk about Lyra Valkyria.
Michael Cole then mentions the two #1 contenders at WWE NXT Battleground.
The panel then discusses the WWE Intercontinental Championship Match between Penta and The Judgment Day’s reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio.
We then get a video package looking at the Singles Match between Pat McAfee and “The Ring General” GUNTHER.
Michael Cole then apologizes to viewers because he does not intend to be unbiased while calling the GUNTHER vs. Pat McAfee match. Cole then talks about how he should be allowed to have an opinion. Cole then says McAfee will give everything he has. Cole then says McAfee might get his ass kicked, but he will give it his all. Cole then says McAfee is doing it for him and the other broadcast team members. Cole then says LeBron James didn’t physically attack Stephen A. Smith when they had issues, they talked it out.
We then see Byron Saxton interviewing LA Knight. Saxton asks Knight about his 2025 and his chances. Knight says they don’t need to sing his praises. Knight then says he doesn’t hear workhorse when he hears those numbers. Knight then says he thinks champion. Knight then says it is okay he came to blows with Priest last night because that will happen in this match. Knight then says he shouldn’t have to deal with a multi-man match for the title. Knight then says anyone standing in the way of him and the title the backlash will be swift and severe.
Big E then delivers his big meaty men slapping meat line regarding the Fatal 4-Way Match for the WWE United States Championship.
Jackie Redmond and Peter Rosenberg then join Big E on the panel.
We then get a video package looking at the Undisputed WWE Championship Match between Undisputed WWE Champion John Cena and “The Viper” Randy Orton.
We then see Wade Barrett having a sit-down interview with “The Viper” Randy Orton. Barrett asks Orton what comes to him when someone says John Cena. Orton says pretentious prick. Orton then says he is all about himself. Orton then says does anyone know the real John Cena. Orton then says today the word would be selfish. Barrett then asks Orton about OVW and his first memories of meeting John Cena. Orton says Cena was a young kid and didn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground. Orton then says Cena was robotic, but had the body of a Greek God. Orton then says Cena had the gift of gab. Orton then says he was impressed with Cena. Barrett then asks what has made the rivalry special. Orton says the fans were loud and he was lucky to be in the ring with Cena because of the Let’s Go Cena, Cena sucks chants. Orton then says the crowd was in the palm of their hands. Orton then says it was the most fun he could have in his career. Orton then says this feels unnecessary. Orton then says the new attitude doesn’t make sense. Orton then says Cena is lost to the Hollywood machine. Orton then says Cena wants to end things on his terms. Orton then says that is why he is selfish.
Barrett then asks if there were glimpses into the darker attitude from Cena. Orton says he thought he might have seen some hints, but Cena keeps himself separate. Orton then says no one went to Cena’s apartment in OVW. Orton then says it was a bit odd. Orton then says Cena has a great mind for business and pushing his brand. Orton then says Cena has masked it from everyone. Orton then says now we are seeing the real John Cena. Barrett then asks about Cena holding the industry with disdain. Orton says he does not understand why Cena has these feelings. Orton then says if he leaves with the title nothing stops or changes. Orton then says the business has continued to move when he left in 2016. Orton then says things won’t bottom out when Cena leaves. Orton then says he would have been proud to see Cena try to disrupt things. Orton then says he will beat the s*** out of Cena in front of his family and friends. Orton then says he won’t mind if he hands get bloody. Orton then says he has to get Cena down long enough to punt his head off his shoulders and then Cena is no more. Orton then says he can retire at that point, but it won’t be 27 dates, it will be 5 to 10 years.
We then get a video package looking at the WWE United States Championship Fatal 4-Way Match, which will kick off the Backlash PLE. The panel then talks about the United States Championship Fatal 4-Way Match.
We then get a video package looking at the WWE Intercontinental Championship Match between reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion “Dirty” Dominik Mysterio and Penta.
We then see Byron Saxton interviewing Dominik Mysterio in the locker room. Saxton asks Dominik if he is afraid of Penta. Dominik says he might be, but that isn’t the point. Dominik then says he already beat Penta on the grandest stage of them all. Saxton then points out that Dominik didn’t pin Penta at WrestleMania. Dominik then points out that he won on the RAW after WrestleMania and Saxton says JD helped him.
Joe Tessitore then talks about the history of wrestling in St. Louis.
The panel then discusses the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship Match.
The panel then discusses the Pat McAfee vs. GUNTHER Match.
The panel then discusses the John Cena vs. Randy Orton Undisputed WWE Championship Match.
Michael Cole then makes his way down to the ring, while the panel continues to speak. Wade Barrett then makes his way down to the ring next. Both men are introduced by ring announcer Alicia Taylor.
Pershard Owens then stands in the ring and performs the national anthem and the Countdown To WWE Backlash Pre-Show comes to a close.
WWE Backlash opens up with Michael Cole welcoming us. Cole then narrates the arrivals and backstage shots of Pat McAfee, GUNTHER, WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyria, Becky Lynch and “The Viper” Randy Orton. We then get a video package on the Backlash PLE matches.
We then get the entrances of the first match of the PLE.
The match starts off with Knight brawling with Fatu as Priest and McIntyre go at it. Priest and McIntyre then spill out of the ring as Knight hits a neckbreaker on Fatu. Knight then sends Priest crashing into the mat with a uranage, then hits a shoulder on Fatu’s midsection and hits a bodyslam on McIntyre. Knight then hits a DDT on Priest and an elbow drop on McIntyre, but Fatu gets Knight on his shoulders. Knight then escapes and hits a swinging neckbreaker on Fatu.
McIntyre then hits a spinebuster on Priest and hits a neckbreaker on him, Knight and Fatu. Fatu then nails Knight with a superkick, but Priest runs over Fatu with a clothesline and hits back elbows on Knight and McIntyre in opposite corners. McIntyre and Fatu then stare down one another in the ring, but Fatu nails McIntyre with a Samoan Drop and teeters on the ropes with him, but Knight drapes McIntyre off the top rope by his knees and delivers some stomps on him. Fatu then hits a Swanton Bomb on McIntyre, but Knight hits him with a BFT. Priest then hits the South of Heaven on Knight, but McIntyre nails Priest with a Claymore Kick.
Priest then falls on top of Knight, but McIntyre breaks up the pin. McIntyre then hits the Future Shock DDT on Fatu, then hits a Claymore Kick on Knight. McIntyre then goes for a pin, but Priest pulls the referee out of the ring to break the fall. Fatu then sets up for a moonsault on Knight, but Knight moves out of the way and hits an elbow drop on Fatu. Knight then hits a second elbow drop off the top rope, then goes for a pin but Fatu kicks out.
Priest and McIntyre then brawl through the crowd and Priest hits a South of Heaven on McIntyre off a road case and through a table. Officials then run to check on both men as Knight looks to fly off the middle rope. Solo Sikoa then moves out of the way and Knight gets in Sikoa’s face. Jeff Cobb then appears out of nowhere and nails Knight from behind, then continues beating him down and sends him crashing into the ring post. Sikoa then signals to Fatu to finish off Knight and Fatu gives him a confused look. Fatu then hits a Hip Attack and moonsault on Knight for the win.
The winner of the Fatal 4-Way Match and still the WWE United States Champion, “The Samoan Werewolf” Jacob Fatu!
After the match, Fatu heads to the back ahead of Sikoa and Cobb.
Several ads then aired, including one for WWE Night of Champions on Saturday, June 28th in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia at Kingdom Arena. Cole says the same venue will play host to SmackDown the night before.
Cole also hypes a Backlash post-show that will include an appearance by Paul “Triple H” Levesque. Cole then says Cena and Orton have had 23 singles matches.
We then get a video package and the entrances of the next match of the PLE, which is a WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship Match.
The match starts with both women wasting no time in going after each other and locking up. Valkyria then wears Lynch down with a submission hold and cinches in a Bow and Arrow on her, then dropkicks her out of the ring and sends her back inside. Both men then continue going back and forth before Valkyria hits a superplex on Lynch off the middle rope. Lynch then rolls up Valkyria, but the referee catches her hand on the bottom rope. Valkyria then hits a leg drop on Lynch and looks to follow it up with a moonsault off the middle rope, but Lynch gets her knees up and exchanges forearm strikes with Valkyria. Lynch then cinches in a Armbar of Valkyria, but Valkyria transitions into a Armbar of her own. Lynch then locks in the Dis-Arm-Her on Valkyria, but Valkyria quickly escapes. Lynch then hits the Man Handle Slam on Valkyria and goes for a pin, but Valkyria kicks out.
Lynch then grabs a chair, but the referee disposes of it. Lynch then exposes the top turnbuckle as she does so, but Valkyria looks to send her crashing into it. Lynch then stops her own momentum, then hits a second Man Handle Slam on Valkyria and goes for a pin, but Valkyria kicks out. Lynch then sends Valkyria’s head repeatedly bouncing off the mat. Valkyria then hits Night Wing on Lynch and goes for a pin, but the referee doesn’t see the fall as she attempts to fix the turnbuckle pad. Lynch then rakes Valkyria’s eyes and rolls her up, but Valkyria counters into a pinfall of her own for the win.

After the match, Lynch immediately attacks Valkyria and puts her in the Dis-Arm-Her. Adam Pearce, referees and producers then make their way out. Lynch then eventually releases the hold. Cole says Valkyria retained her title, then questions at what cost. Lynch then heads to the back. A weary Valkyria then holds up her title belt, while two referees try to keep her upright. Cole then says Valkyria may have broken her nose, but she has arrived.
We then get a video package and the entrances of the next match of the PLE, which is a WWE Intercontinental Championship Match.
The match starts off with Dominik going straight after Penta. Penta then hits a hurricanrana on Dominik, but Dominik hits a tope suicida-DDT combination on Penta. Dominik then flies over the top rope and pins Penta, but Penta kicks out and hits a crossbody on Dominik off the ring post. Dominik then hits The Three Amigos on Penta and sends him crashing into the ring ropes, then looks to dial it up for the 619.
Penta then moves out of the way, but Dominik hits the Oblivion on Penta. Dominik then goes for a pin, but Penta kicks out. Penta then hits a Canadian Destroyer on Dominik, but Finn Bálor, Carlito and JD McDonagh appear at ringside. Bálor then grabs a chair from the ringside area, but the referee catches him. The referee then ejects Bálor, Carlito and McDonagh from ringside. Bálor then reemerges at ringside and while the referee is distracted by him, Penta climbs up the ropes. El Grande Americano then hits a headbutt on Penta with the metal piece in his mask. Dominik then follows it up with a Frog Splash on Penta for the win.

Michael Cole then hypes AJ Styles vs. Finn Bálor on Monday’s RAW in Louisville, Kentucky. Cole then. says many consider it to be a dream matchup. Cole also lists the War Raiders vs. The Creed Brothers, IYO Sky and Rhea Ripley vs. Roxanne Perez and Giulia and CM Punk making his return to speak for the first time since WrestleMania.
Cole also hypes Saturday Night’s Main Event on May 24th featuring Jey Uso vs. Logan Paul for the World Heavyweight Championship. The Karate Kid Legends section is then shown. This consisted of a bunch of people wearing headbands and doing karate poses.
We then get a video package and the entrances of the next match of the PLE, which is a Singles Match between Pat McAfee and “The Ring General” GUNTHER.
The match starts off with McAfee removing his jersey and tossing it into the crowd. A “you tapped out” chant then mocks GUNTHER. Both men then lock up. Both men then go back and forth. GUNTHER then mocks McAfee, but McAfee delivers some forearms on GUNTHER. GUNTHER then nails McAfee, but McAfee delivers some chops on GUNTHER. GUNTHER then responds with a series of strikes and chops McAfee in the corner, then follows it up with a shoulder tackle. McAfee then hits a kick on GUNTHER’s spine, but GUNTHER regains the upper hand.
We then get more back and forth action from both men. GUNTHER then hits a chop and a German suplex on McAfee, then looks to hit a second one off the middle rope. McAfee then hangs on and hits a moonsault on GUNTHER, then follows it up with a kick and a superkick. GUNTHER then hits a powerbomb on McAfee and locks in a Boston Crab on him before transitioning into a crossface.
Cole then gets up from the ringside area and cheers McAfee on from ringside. GUNTHER then drags Cole into the ring, but McAfee comes to Cole’s aid. GUNTHER then runs over McAfee with a kick, but McAfee rolls up GUNTHER. GUNTHER then kicks out, but McAfee pins him as Cole hangs into his foot to help McAfee. GUNTHER then kicks out and gets in Cole’s face, but McAfee locks in a Sleeper on GUNTHER. GUNTHER then escapes and cinches in a Sleeper on McAfee, but McAfee stays alive. McAfee then delivers some elbows on GUNTHER’s midsection as he looks to escape the hold, but GUNTHER keeps it cinched in and puts McAfee to sleep.

After the match, Cole enters the ring to check on McAfee. GUNTHER then looks down at both men. McAfee then gets to his feet and GUNTHER gives him a bit of a hat tip style acknowledgment before leaving the ring. Cole then hugs McAfee and leaves him to have a moment alone in the ring.
Cole then returns to the commentary desk and says he has to get back to work and call one of the most important main events in WWE history.
We then get a video package and the entrances of the main event of the PLE, which is an Undisputed WWE Championship Match.
The match starts off with both men wasting no time in going after each other and locking up. Cena then offers a handshake to Orton. Orton then accepts, but Cena pokes him in the eye. Cena then applies a side head lock on Orton. Orton then hits a shoulder tackle on Cena and follows it up with a thumb to the eye. Cena then goes to the floor. Both men then lock up again and Orton backs Cena into the corner. Orton then punches Cena after blocking one from Cena. Orton then applies a side head lock on Cena. Orton then hits a shoulder tackle on Cena and follows it up with a side head lock to take Cena down.
Orton then hits a shoulder tackle on Cena and Cena goes to the apron. Cena then heads up the aisle and Orton chases after Cena, then hits him with a lariat. Orton then hits some punches on Cena as they go back to the ring. Cena then hits a clothesline and some punches on Orton. Cena then goes to the turnbuckles to punch Orton. Orton then kicks Cena. Orton then hits a European uppercut on Cena for a near fall. Orton then hits the Garvin Stomp on Cena. Orton then hits a leaping knee drop on Cena for a near fall. Cena then applies a sleeper on Orton and he gets on Orton’s back to add more pressure to the hold.
Orton then applies a sleeper on Cena and transitions into a rear naked choke. Cena then responds with a rear naked choke of his own. Orton then responds with another choke of his own. Orton then hits a belly-to-back suplex and both men are down. Cena then hits two flying shoulder tackles followed by a Blue Thunder Bomb. Cena then sets for the five knuckle shuffle and he hits it. Cena then gets ready for the Attitude Adjustment, but Orton escapes and nails Cena, then hits a Scoop Powerslam on him. Cena then responds with a couple of Attitude Adjustments on Orton, but Orton responds with an RKO on Cena. Orton then sets up for the Punt, but Cena counters into another Attitude Adjustment. Cena then goes for a pin, but Orton kicks out.
Cena then looks to hit a Punt on Orton, but Orton looks to counter into an RKO. Cena then sends Orton crashing into the referee and hits another Attitude Adjustment on Orton, then grabs the Undisputed WWE Championship belt from ringside. Orton then hits Cena with an RKO and goes for a pin, but Cena kicks out after the referee begins the count a second too late. Orton then sees Cena down on the floor and he rearranges the announce desk. Cena then pushes Orton from behind and the referee goes down. Cena then sends Orton into the ring post. Orton then escapes an Attitude Adjustment and Orton hits Cena with an Attitude Adjustment onto the announce desk.
Orton then looks under the ring while the referee continues to be knocked out. Orton then finds a table. Orton then sets up the table on the floor. Orton then sends Cena into the ringside barrier and Cena does the same. Cena then sends Orton into the ring steps. Cena then gets Orton up and Orton escapes, then he hits Cena with an Attitude Adjustment through the table. Both men then return to the ring and Orton hits an RKO on Cena. A second referee then makes his down way to the ring, but Cena kicks out at two. Cena then hits the referee with the belt and Orton hits Cena with an RKO.
There is no referee to make the count. Officials then make their way down to the ring and there is some confusion. Orton then looks around and he yells at Nick Aldis. Orton then hits Aldis with an RKO. All of other the agents then get hit with an RKO. Orton then backs up to kick Cena in the head. R-Truth then gets in the way to stop Orton. Orton then hits an RKO on Truth. Cena then hits a low blow on Orton and picks up the title belt. Cena then hits Orton with the belt for the win.

After the match, Cena says he wants the music stopped. Cena then says he doesn’t need music. Cena then says what he needs is competition and he sure as hell doesn’t need you. Cena then tells St. Louis to drink it in because this is what the last real champion looks like. Cena then stands tall and WWE Backlash comes to a close.
