The March 28th edition of Friday Night SmackDown was headlined by CM Punk, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins’s contract signing segment, as it was confirmed they would face each other in the main event of WrestleMania 41 Night One. Regarding the segment, Triple H has now explained how it all came together.

While speaking to High Performance, Triple H talked about how the contract signing between CM Punk, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins on SmackDown was put together. He said that the main idea for the segment where Punk gets his chance to main event WrestleMania had been planned for a while, and everyone knew the main points: the contract would be signed, and there was a mysterious favor involved that wouldn’t be explained right away.

“On SmackDown the other night, here from the O2, we did a contract signing with CM Punk, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins. Paul Heyman was out there, obviously. We’ve all known the premise of this contract signing for a while, and we know what the highlights are — they’re going to sign the contract, Punk’s going to get his opportunity to main event WrestleMania. But there’s this favor that’s owed — it’s this elaborate thing — and we’re not going to know what the shoe that drops is just yet. But that’s not the favor you owe me.”

The Game mentioned that the details of the segment were worked out in the weeks leading up to the show, sometimes just a few days before. On the day of the event, everyone knew the main plan. Paul Heyman, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and CM Punk would then meet to decide exactly what each person would say, how they would say it, and what emotions they wanted to show. Triple H gave them the freedom to plan it.

“Then we sort of all hash out what that segment will look like, probably a couple of weeks before, or maybe the week before. Then we get there that day and it’s like, ‘Okay, everybody’s got the basic core tenets of this… and here you go.’

Then the three or four of them — Heyman, Roman, Seth, Punk — sit in a room and figure out exactly what they’re all going to say, how they’re going to say it, who’s going to say what, what the reactions are, what the emotions are going to be, how they’re going to do it. And I let them sort of go do that.”

However, if they had any questions about how things should go or if they were unsure about something, he would help out. He would offer suggestions to improve certain parts, adding new ideas they hadn’t thought of before. Triple H said that the key to success was working together and trusting the performers to do their part, while still being open to some guidance and adjustments.

“But if they have a question — ‘Where are we going with this?’ or ‘How does that work?’ or ‘Hey, we’re all on the fence about this, can we run this by you? We’re thinking about doing this’ — I’ll say, ‘Well, that’s cool. What if—’ That sounds cool here, but now I’m on the outside looking in, and I can say, ‘I feel that… but what if you did this?’ And then it’s, ‘Oh, s***, yeah, that adds a whole other layer. We didn’t even think of that.’

Right? Because you start getting… So collaboration is the secret. Collaboration — and the ability to trust performers to go out and do their thing.”

With WrestleMania 41 coming soon, fans are more excited than ever. CM Punk is finally getting his chance in the main event, and we will have to wait and see whether he will win the triple threat match at WrestleMania 41, as fans would love for that to happen.
