Rey Fenix’s situation in AEW has created a lot of discussion, with many criticizing Tony Khan for keeping him under contract for no reason whatsoever as Khan added injury time to Fenix’s contract. Interestingly enough, it appears that AEW considered releasing Rey Fenix but they didn’t go through with it.

AEW recently parted ways with several wrestlers for different reasons, including Ricky Starks, Malakai Black, Miro, and Bear Boulder. Boulder’s release followed his arrest for domestic battery, while Black’s contract expired. Miro and Starks reportedly requested their releases and were granted the same.

While speaking on the NXT post-show, Sean Ross Sapp talked about the latest slew of AEW releases. Sean Ross Sapp mentioned that AEW had been considering releasing or allowing contracts to expire for certain talent who were unhappy and wanted to leave.

Initially, it seemed like Bear Boulder’s situation was the only release happening, but more names followed. At one point, AEW also considered letting Rey Fenix go, but ultimately decided against it.

“I had heard Friday that AEW releases were either happening or coming. At that moment, I thought it was just the Bear Boulder situation, which they fortunately very quickly took care of. I had heard for a while that within AEW, they had at least considered releasing or letting contracts lapse on a few talent that were not happy and wanted to go elsewhere. At one point, they considered Rey Fenix. They didn’t end up doing that.”

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that Rey Fenix has been exploring ways to get released from AEW. Dave Meltzer noted that Fenix appears to be trying to get fired, showing that both WWE and AEW contracts include clauses allowing extensions for missed time due to injury, as he said, “I think right now Fenix is looking at being fired.”

We will have to wait and see whether AEW will decide to release Rey Fenix earlier than expected so that he can simply go join his brother Penta in WWE. After all, Fenix simply wants clarity on his future and he simply isn’t happy being part of AEW anymore.
