WWE SmackDown Results (1/17/25): Live Match Updates and Highlights

* The show opens up with Joe Tessitore welcoming us. Tessitore is shown walking through the crowd with Wade Barrett as he spoke about the history of the building. Barrett then says that it is Tiffy Time because she will make her first title defense tonight. Stratton is then shown walking in the parking lot earlier in the day. Bayley is shown walking backstage. Jimmy Uso and Carmelo Hayes are also shown. Tessitore then says there is only one person deserving of opening the show. Barrett then calls him the hometown Hall Of Famer himself.

WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio’s music then hits and he makes his way down to the ring. Mysterio is standing in the middle of the ring while the crowd is cheering. Mysterio is soaking in the “619!” chants. Mysterio then welcomes the fans to Friday Night SmackDown and says it is the home of the 6-1-9. Mysterio then says it is good to be home in front of his people. Mysterio then says he requested to be out there because he wanted to declare his entry into the 2025 Royal Rumble. Mysterio then notes how in 2006 he entered at No. 2 and became the winner of the Rumble match that year. Mysterio then follows that up by reminding everyone how he became a world champion at WrestleMania 22. Mysterio then says the competition is heavy for this year’s Rumble match. Mysterio then cites Drew McIntyre, CM Punk, Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns and John Cena. Mysterio then reflects in the fact that when he won in 2006 he did it for a friend and the crowd went crazy with “Eddie!” chants.

Kevin Owens’ music then hits and Owens makes his way out with the Winged Eagle belt. Owens is standing in the entryway with a microphone. Owens says he is sorry for interrupting Rey, but he had to go out there because he heard Rey talk about how he was going to win the Rumble. Owens then says he doesn’t respect many people more than he respects Mysterio. Owens then says he’s rooting for Rey to win the Men’s Royal Rumble so that he can have his dream match against him at WrestleMania for the Winged Eagle Championship. Mysterio then says he’s all about challenges and competition, but Owens isn’t Undisputed WWE Champion. Owens then becomes enraged with Rey’s comments and begins yelling at him and Rey tells Owens to calm down as he’s reminding him of Dominik Mysterio. Owens then looks to take a shot at Rey, but Rey sees it coming and looks to dial it up for a 619 on Owens. Owens then rolls out of the ring before Rey can hit the maneuver. Rey’s music then hit to end the segment.

We then head to the back, where Naomi and Bianca Belair were talking about how they still didn’t have any leads on who attacked Jade Cargill. Naomi then says they need to focus on tonight and getting their revenge against Jax and LeRae. Naomi then tells Belair to wrap her braid so they don’t repeat what happened last week when there was some miscommunication in the Fatal 4-Way.

Nia Jax and Candice LeRae then make their way down to the ring for the first match of the night.

SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis is then shown talking to Rey Mysterio backstage and Aldis tells Rey that he will face Owens later in the night. Cody Rhodes then shows up and Rhodes tells Aldis he has been cleared with a clean bill of health. Aldis then says he has an addendum for the ladder match at the Rumble and he needs Cody to sign it. Cody then says he will sign it once Owens signs it.

Bianca Belair and Naomi then make their way down to the ring for the first match of the night.

Tag Team Match: WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion “The EST Of WWE” Bianca Belair and Naomi vs. “The Irresistible Force” Nia Jax and Candice LeRae

The match starts off with Nia Jax attacking Naomi from behind. Belair then goes after Jax before LeRae delivers some left and right hands on Naomi. Belair then nails LeRae with a shoulder tackle and follows it up with a vertical suplex, then delivers a shoulder on her in the corner. Belair then delivers some right hands on LeRae and sends her over the top rope with a Gorilla Press on top of Jax to take them both down. Jax then tags in and Belair whips Jax with her braid. Belair then pins Jax, but Jax kicks out and tags LeRae back in. LeRae then wears down Belair with a submission hold, but Belair rolls up LeRae. LeRae then kicks out and Belair looks to tag out to Naomi. LeRae prevents her from doing so, but Belair escapes her grasp and looks to do so a second time.

Jax then pulls Naomi off the apron before she can. Jax then tags in and hits a Samoan Drop on Belair. Naomi then tags in and hits a roundhouse kick to Jax’s head from the apron. Belair then tags back in, but Jax nails her and hits a Samoan Drop on Naomi. Belair then nails Jax with a spear and looks to hit a springboard moonsault on her, but LeRae tags in and hits Belair with a dropkick. LeRae then follows it up with a step-up senton and Jax hits a senton of her own on Belair. Belair then hits a springboard moonsault on LeRae and pins her, but Jax looks to break the fall with a leg drop. She then accidentally hits LeRae with the maneuver, opening the door for Naomi to hit a Full Nelson Bomb for the win.

We then see Byron Saxton interview Bayley earlier in the day. Saxton asks Bayley what the match against Tiffany means to her. Bayley says the night will be huge for her and reflects on last year around this time when she won the Royal Rumble and beat IYO SKY at WrestleMania. Bayley then says she felt like she could have done better as WWE Women’s Champion and her reign was cut short because of Tiffany Stratton. Bayley then notes how Tiffany turned on her best friend and that makes her want to beat Tiffany that much more.

Michin is then shown talking with B-Fab in the locker room. B-Fab tells Michin to keep her head up because she will eventually take Chelsea Green down. Piper Niven and Chelsea Green then shows up and Green correctly points out that she is the only woman to successfully defend the Women’s U.S. Title in history. B-Fab then stands up and Niven gets in her way. B-Fab then says she is going to talk to Aldis about getting a match with Niven later tonight.

Jimmy Uso is then shown walking backstage and towards the ring. Jimmy says his brother is getting a title match, so it’s time for Big Jim to step up and try to get his. Jimmy’s music then hits and the camera follows him through the entranceway and into the ring.

Carmelo Hayes then makes his way down to the ring with a microphone. Hayes says Roman Reigns is going to the Rumble, while Jey has a world title shot but Jimmy has nothing going. Carmelo then asks Jimmy how he could take shots at him, while he’s sitting on the bench. Carmelo then tells Jimmy he will show him why he doesn’t miss.

Singles Match: Jimmy Uso vs. Carmelo Hayes

The match starts off with Jimmy Uso pulling Carmelo Hayes over the top rope. Hayes then avoids a superkick and ducks to ringside. Hayes then hops back on the apron and clotheslines Uso over the top rope. Uso then sends Hayes to the apron and nails him with a right hand. Uso then hits a suplex on Hayes on the apron, causing Hayes to fall to the floor. Uso then hits Hayes with a suicide dive and Hayes tumbles over the commentary desk.

Hayes then delivers some right hands on Jimmy back inside the ring, then hits a Hip Attack on him in the corner and wears Jimmy down with a submission. Jimmy then hits an open palm strike on Hayes, but Hayes sends Jimmy crashing into the mat face first. Hayes then looks to fly off the top, but Jimmy intercepts him with a superkick and goes for a pin. Hayes then kicks out, but Jimmy hits a Hip Attack on Hayes and sets up for a Samoan Drop. Hayes then counters into a roll-up. Jimmy then kicks out and catches Hayes with a spear, then looks to fly off the top. Jacob Fatu then distracts Jimmy and Tama Tonga pushes Jimmy off the top rope causing the disqualification.

After the match, Fatu and Tama continue beating down Jimmy. Fatu then hits a Hip Attack on Jimmy in the corner before Solo Sikoa makes his way down to the ring.

Sikoa is standing in the ring and Fatu hands Sikoa a microphone. The crowd then boos them. Before Sikoa can say anything, he drops the mic, takes off his red jacket and leaves through the crowd. Fatu then stares at Sikoa as he walks away. Fatu doesn’t look happy and picks up the microphone Sikoa drops. Fatu then screams, “So, this is what it comes to, huh?” Fatu then says he is tired of the disrespect and the hate and the envy. Fatu then says even on a bad day, nobody could touch him. Fatu then says he could give a damn if anyone cheers or boos him, but one thing he won’t do is let people think he never got his.

Fatu then asks if people thought he was losing it and was crazy. Fatu then says the craziest thing about the situation is that he’s just getting started. LA Knight’s music then hits and Fatu squares up, but Knight runs in from the crowd and takes out Fatu and Tonga until Fatu gets the upper hand. Braun Strowman’s music then hits and Braun makes his way out. Tonga then tries to hit Strowman with a splash, but Braun catches Tonga and disposes of him. Fatu and Braun then engages in a stare down, but Tonga pulls Fatu out of the ring to end the segment.

Los Garza is then shown backstage and Santos Escobar walks up to them. Escobar says he is happy they exposed Pretty Deadly as liars last week. Escobar then says Los Garza will take a tag title opportunity away from Motor City Machine Guns tonight. Escobar then says if they want respect, they must take it. Legado Del Fantasma then come together as the segment ends.

Motor City Machine Guns then make their way down to the ring and Legado Del Fantasma follows.

WWE Tag Team Championship #1 Contender’s Match: Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin) vs. Los Garza (Angel and Berto)

The match starts off with Alex Shelley and Angel and both men lock up. Angel hits an open palm strike on Shelley and nails a chop on him, then tags in Berto. Los Garza then double team on Shelley and Berto hits him with a standing moonsault. Chris Sabin then tags in and hits a double back body drop on Berto with Shelley. The Motor City Machine Guns then double team on Angel. Berto then continues wearing down Sabin before Angel tags in and follows suit, wearing down Sabin with a submission hold.

Berto and Shelley then tag in and Shelley delivers some right hands on Berto. He then follows it up with a back elbow and takes a shot at Angel on the apron, but Sabin tags in and hits a Dragon Screw on Berto. Shelley then hits a second one on him and The Motor City Machine Guns hits a double dropkick on Berto. The Motor City Machine Guns then lock in double Figure Four Leg Locks on Berto and Angel, but Angel and Berto escape.

Berto then hits a sit-out powerbomb on Shelley and pins him, but Shelley kicks out. Los Garza then double team on The Motor City Machine Guns, but Sabin uses Berto as a launching pad to hit a Tornado DDT on Angel. Shelley then holds the middle rope open for Sabin to fly through. The Motor City Machine Guns then set up for Skull and Bones, but Kit Wilson knocks Sabin off the top rope as Elton Prince distracts the referee. Berto then rolls up Sabin, but the referee misses the pinfall. The Motor City Machine Guns then hit Skull and Bones on Berto for the win.

Nick Aldis is then shown walking backstage and he runs into Kevin Owens. Aldis says he needs Owens to sign the addendum to the world title match at the Royal Rumble, but Owens says he will not sign it until Cody signs it. Owens then tells Aldis to stop trying to distract him as he prepares for his match against Rey Mysterio.

Piper Niven then makes her way down to the ring for the next match of the night with WWE Women’s United States Champion Chelsea Green and B-Fab follows.

Singles Match: Piper Niven vs. B-Fab

The match starts off with B-Fab hitting a superkick on Niven. B-Fab then follows it up with a Facebuster, but Niven sends B-Fab crashing into the mat and looks to hit a running senton. B-Fab then rolls out of the way to avoid it and hits a DDT on Niven, then goes for a pin but Niven kicks out. B-Fab then sends Niven crashing off the ring apron with a big boot and gets her back in the ring, but Niven hits a senton on her when she slides back inside the ring and follows it up with a Michinoku Driver for the win.

After the match, Michin makes her way down to the ring with a kendo stick in hand. Niven then inserts herself between Green and Michin in order to prevent Michin from hitting Green with the kendo stick.

Joe Tessitore then leads a tribute to Bob Uecker, who passed away this week.

Byron Saxton then interviews Tiffany Stratton in the backstage area. Saxton says Bayley is extremely driven to win the WWE Women’s Championship. Tiffany then says Bayley has had a career of big moments, but she has had big moments too. Tiffany then says she is a Big Moment and now it’s Tiffy Time. Tiffany then says toodles and leaves Saxton standing in the hallway.

WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio then makes his way down to the ring for the next match of the night and Kevin Owens follows.

Singles Match: LWO’s WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio vs. “The Prize Fighter” Kevin Owens

The match starts off with both men locking up and going back-and-forth, then Rey rolls up Owens. Owens then kicks out and hits a senton on Rey, then sends him into the corner chest first and slides under the bottom rope to land a splash on Owens. Rey then delivers some right hands on Owens in the corner, then sends him crashing into one of the barricades and hits him with a senton off the barricade. Owens then sends Rey’s face bouncing off the barricade twice in front of Rey’s daughter, but Rey returns the favor. Owens then sends Rey into the ring steps and pats Rey’s daughter on the head, then sends Rey back in the ring and goes for a pin but Rey kicks out.

Owens then sends Rey into the mat, but Rey sends Owens crashing into the ring post shoulder first and follows it up with a senton. Rey then goes for a pin, but Owens kicks out. Rey then hits a hurricanrana on Owens in the corner, but Owens intercepts him with a superkick. Rey then sends Owen crashing into the mat, but Owens hits a Frog Splash on him off the top and goes for a pin but Rey kicks out.

Owens then places Rey on the top rope and looks to hit a superplex, but Rey counters into a Sunset Powerbomb and follows it up with a Canadian Destroyer. Owens then responds with a Stunner on Rey and pins him, but Rey kicks out. Owens then climbs to the top rope and looks to hit a Swanton Bomb, but Rey gets his knees up and dials it up for a 619 before Owens hits a Pop-Up Powerbomb on Rey for the win.

After the match, Owens looks to show his respect to Rey. However, he nails a kick on his midsection and looks to deliver a piledriver on him. Cody Rhodes’ music then hits before Owens can and he makes his way down to the ring, leading to a major brawl between him and Owens until officials run down to the ring to separate the two men. Owens then stands on a platform and holds up the title belt, while Cody is in the ring.

Nick Aldis is then shown talking to Cody backstage. Aldis says Cody and Owens are out of control. Aldis then says next week at Saturday Night’s Main Event Owens and Cody will relinquish their belts and sign the contract with the addendum and with the special enforcer for the signing being Shawn Michales. It is then announced that Braun Strowman will take on Jacob Fatu at SNME.

Pretty Deadly are then shown walking and they run into #DIY. Ciampa says he is angry that Pretty Deadly handed the victory to MCMG earlier in the night. Ciampa then says Pretty Deadly are a joke and everyone is laughing at them. Ciampa then leaves and Gargano tells Pretty Deadly it is tough love and they truly believe in Pretty Deadly. Gargano then says they want to make life better for Pretty Deadly and walks away. Apollo Crews then shows up and tells Pretty Deadly working with #DIY has gotten them nowhere. Gargano then shows up again and attacks Crews by throwing him into a road case.

Bayley then makes her way down for the main event of the show and the camera shows Roxanne Perez sitting in the crowd. Bayley then stands on the ropes and looks down at Perez.

We then get a Charlotte Flair video vignette.

WWE Women’s Champion Tiffany Stratton then makes her way down to the ring for the main event of the night.

WWE Women’s Championship Match: Tiffany Stratton (c) vs. Bayley

The match starts off with both women locking up. They then go back and forth, but Bayley hits a back elbow on the back of Stratton’s neck. Stratton then responds with an elbow of her own, then sends Bayley into the corner. Bayley then hits an arm drag on Stratton out of the corner, then follows it up with a basement clothesline. Bayley then wears Stratton down with a submission hold, then goes for a pin but Stratton kicks out. Stratton then sends Bayley into the mat, then delivers some stomps on her and uses the bottom rope to wear down her elbow. Stratton then sends Bayley into the corner, then wears her down with a submission of her own. Stratton then stomps on Bayley’s arm, then goes for a pin but Bayley kicks out.

Stratton then continues wearing down Bayley’s arm, but Bayley sends Stratton into the corner. Stratton then trips Bayley on the ring apron twice, then goes for a pin back inside the ring. Bayley then kicks out, but Stratton tangles her up in the ring skirt and hits her with a running Hip Attack. Bayley then responds with a Bayley-To-Belly on Stratton on the outside. Stratton and Bayley then return back inside the ring before Stratton hits a dropkick on Bayley. Bayley and Stratton then teeter on the ropes, but Bayley hits a superplex on Stratton and goes for a pin. Stratton then kicks out and Bayley climbs back up the ropes, but Stratton trips her and climbs up them herself. Stratton then hits a Swanton Bomb on Bayley and follows it up with a powerbomb, then goes for a pin but Bayley kicks out.

Stratton then cinches in a Fujiwara Armbar on Bayley, but Bayley responds by hitting a suplex on Stratton on the outside using the announce desk. Bayley then gets in Perez’s face in the crowd, then sends Stratton back inside the ring and climbs to the top. Bayley then hits an Elbow Drop and goes for a pin, but Stratton kicks out. Bayley then transitions into a crossface, but Stratton escapes and hits an Alabama Slam on Bayley. Bayley then gets Stratton up on her shoulders and sends her crashing into the mat, then goes for another pin but Stratton kicks out. Stratton then rolls up Bayley, but Bayley kicks out and sets up for a Rose Plant. Stratton then counters into a second Alabama Slam and follows it up with the Prettiest Moonsault Ever for the win.

The winner and still the WWE Women’s Champion, Tiffany Stratton!

After the match, Stratton stands tall and celebrates and the show comes to a close.
