Dominik Mysterio has solidified his place as one of WWE’s top heels in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. He thrives on provoking reactions from everyone, including CM Punk. In fact, Dominik recently took a jab at Punk and he mocked Punk’s disdain for the term “moveset” in wrestling.
While speaking on the No Contest podcast, Dominik Mysterio talked about facing CM Punk in Punk’s return match last year, saying it was exactly what he expected. He mentioned the energy they had in the ring and joked about Punk’s plain outfit during the match. Mysterio appreciated being trusted by the company to be part of such an important moment in Punk’s comeback.
“I had the great dishonor of welcoming Punk back after 10 long years, and, you know, it was everything I expected it to be—just an old man trying to do his thing. He thinks he still has it. I’m pretty sure you guys saw the match. He went out there in some plain black underwear, didn’t even have his gear. It was definitely a sight to see.
Overall, I’m glad the company trusted me to get in there with CM Punk and give him his first couple of punches back as a nice welcome-home gift. But I’d definitely like to have more than just those two matches because the energy we had in there was something special.”
Mysterio also recalled a personal memory from his childhood when Punk sang “Happy Birthday” to his sister during an episode of Friday Night SmackDown, when Punk was part of the Straight Edge Society.
“I feel like he owes me something too. I don’t know if he remembers, but I’m sure he does—he sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to my sister when I was probably about 12 years old. He cornered my whole family when he had his… what was it? His s*****, long black hair? Oh yeah, the Straight Edge Society! I barely remember it because, honestly, it doesn’t matter.”
Now more confident and experienced, Mysterio said he would love to face Punk again, feeling ready to handle his style. He also added that he knows Punk’s moves and took a jab at Punk’s dislike for the word “moveset” in wrestling.
“But now that I’m my own man, and he doesn’t have to corner me anymore, I’d love to get my hands on him again. Now that I’m prepared and ready, I’ve seen what he can do. It’s nothing special—he does the same things. I’m pretty sure I can read his playbook. Actually, here’s a good one: I know his moveset.”
This stems from CM Punk recently going off on Peter Rosenberg for using the term “moveset.” CM Punk dismissed the term as meaningless internet wrestling garbage, going as far as to call anyone who uses it an idiot. He specifically targeted wrestlers who use the term, stating that it reflects a lack of understanding about their work.
“Don’t say moveset. It’s garbage internet wrestling talk. If you say that, you’re an idiot. Especially if you’re a wrestler and you say moveset, that 100% tells me that you don’t know what the hell you were doing.”
Regardless, we will have to wait and see if Dominik Mysterio will ever get to square off against The Second City Saint again in the future, as fans would love to see that happen especially since Mysterio is trying to keep their feud alive.
