Kevin Owens is no stranger to sharing unforgettable wrestling stories, and his first encounter with Stone Cold Steve Austin is a tale worth telling. In a newly released WWE interview, Owens revealed the surprising and impactful advice Austin gave him during their first meeting at an airport layover on the way to a PWG show.
Recalling the moment, Owens said, “As I get to the gate, I see Stone Cold. He’s kind of off on the side trying to be discreet, but I’m like, I gotta go talk to him. This is my absolute idol in wrestling. Shawn Michaels made me want to be a wrestler, but once the Ringmaster came to WWE, I was all about Stone Cold.”
Owens grabbed his traveling partner, Sami Zayn, to join him. However, Zayn hilariously misinterpreted the situation. “For some reason, he thinks we’re gonna fight somebody. So as we’re walking there, he goes, ‘Who are we fighting?’ I go, ‘What? We’re gonna go talk to Stone Cold!’”
Once they introduced themselves as independent wrestlers, the WWE Hall of Famer was more than willing to chat. After about 10 minutes of talking, Austin was called to board first class but left Owens with some unforgettable advice.
“I go, ‘Hey, dude, I gotta ask you—one piece of advice, anything.’ And he goes, ‘Just never stop running your mouth.’ Then he looked at Sami and said, ‘That plancha will kill you, so just never stop running your mouth.’”
For Owens, that advice shaped his in-ring persona. “From that point on, man, I would talk so much in my matches nonstop, that it became a staple of my act on the independent scene,” Owens explained.
Kevin Owens took Stone Cold’s advice and ran with it—literally and figuratively—turning nonstop trash-talking into one of his signature traits. It’s proof that even a brief encounter with a legend can change the game. What’s your take on Stone Cold’s advice?
