Ricky Starks has been a fixture in AEW since 2020, consistently delivering compelling matches when called upon. However, a recent injury scare during Collision prompted a change in plans, leading to an audible being called. The original match plans have since been disclosed.

Ricky Starks appeared to sustain a legitimate injury during AEW Collision this week, resulting in a change to the outcome of the AEW Tag Team Title tournament match. According to Sean Ross Sapp behind Fightful’s paywall, Starks and Big Bill were initially slated to advance in the tournament, facing Top Flight in the opening round.

Towards the match’s climax, Starks was meant to kick out of a pinfall attempt but missed it. Despite his shoulder being on the mat, the referee stopped the count, leading to crowd dissatisfaction. Subsequently, Starks endured a DDT from Darius Martin before being pinned. Trainers attended to him post-match.

Even on the television broadcast, it was evident that Tony Schiavone was anticipating a kickout by Starks, which unfortunately didn’t occur. Originally, Big Bill and Starks were set to confront FTR in the next round, but now it is Top Flight who advances.
