Gunther’s awe-inspiring run in NXT UK was simply just the beginning of his career in WWE. Following a decent run on NXT afterwards, Gunther was called up to the main roster and has since become a bonafide star there. That said, it appears WWE has been criticized for diminishing Gunther.

The Ring General won the WWE Intercontinental Championship in June 2022 and has since defended it several times already. With each win, Gunther’s stock continues to rise and he becomes more and more dominating.

As seen on last week’s episode of Monday Night RAW, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens squared off against Gunther and Ludwig Kaiser in a tag team match. Zayn pinned Kaiser following the Blue Thunder Bomb to pick up the win.

While speaking on the Jim Cornette’s Drive Thru podcast, Jim Cornette talked bout the aforementioned tag team match. He criticized WWE for diminishing Gunther by having him lose in a tag team match as Gunther is a top singles star.

“Now they’re doing the thing where Owens just has the shortest temper in the world and has no patience and just starts blowing up and going off and yelling and mad and what’s going on here and ahhh they’re too close to me. So now he’s losing his fu***** mind, apparently, and something’s gonna go on and this is gonna lead to something with him and Sami at some point. I don’t know how long they’re gonna milk it.

But in this whole thing, Gunther barely spent, now Gunther is teaming with one of his stooges in a losing effort for the tag team title just because they want allegedly compelling programming. So I wasn’t really a fan of them even making this match because it diminishes Gunther standing as a top singles guy, to me I’m sorry anyway. So that was that.”

As previously reported, WWE is already discussing having Gunther break The Honky Tonk Man’s record as the Intercontinental Champion. It remains to be seen whether he will end up breaking the record.

What’s your opinion on what Jim Cornette said? Do you think he will break The Honky Tonk Man’s record? Let us know in the comments!
