Santana and Ortiz made their debut in AEW back in 2019 and wasted no time in becoming one of the mainstays of AEW’s tag team division. Unfortunately, the two are no longer on good terms whatsoever. Santana has also been out of action since last year due to injury and now it seems AEW continued to pay Santana while he rehabbed his injury.

Santana sustained a knee injury during an episode of Dynamite in June of last year, while performing a uranage on Daniel Garcia during the Blood and Guts match. This caused him to take time off to recover from the injury.

Last year, it was reported that Santana might be thinking about leaving AEW. Santana was tweeting cryptic countdowns such as “126 days” and “Soon.” This led to fans believing he was done with AEW for good.

According to Sean Ross Sapp behind Fightful’s paywall, it was confirmed that Santana is still signed to a contract with AEW, and he has been paid through the duration of his injury rehabilitation.

It has been reported that if Santana’s AEW contract was indeed set to expire in September 2022, as he had hinted previously, the company may attempt to extend his contract beyond that date to make up for the time he missed due to his injury. This would allow him to fulfill the contracted time that he would have had left if he had not been injured.

Only time will tell when Santana will be able to make his return to AEW television. After all, fans really miss the tag team specialist. That said, it remains to be seen what AEW will even have planned for him after his return.

What do you think AEW should do with Santana once he returns from his injury? Leave a comment.
