William Regal made his surprise debut for AEW at the Revolution pay-per-view event in 2022. Soon after, it was confirmed that Regal had signed with Tony Khan’s company. In the months that followed, Regal formed the Blackpool Combat Club comprising Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson, Claudio Castagnoli, and Wheeler Yuta. Now that AEW is already in his rearview mirror, Regal is back in WWE and in very fine shape.

At AEW Full Gear, Regal helped MJF defeat Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship by handing The Salt Of The Earth his iconic brass knuckles while the referee was incapacitated. On the November 30th episode of Dynamite, Regal was written off AEW TV in an angle that saw MJF turn on the veteran wrestler.

It was later reported that William Regal was leaving AEW. His Lordship had asked Tony Khan to not renew his AEW contract so he could return to WWE and work with his son Charlie Dempsey on the NXT brand. On December 30, 2022, Regal officially parted ways with AEW.

Regal returned to WWE this past month. He took on a non-televised role and was named the Vice President of Global Talent Development.

During Thursday’s NXT conference call, Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative, Shawn Michaels addressed William Regal’s return to WWE.

“Yeah, sure. Obviously, it’s great to have him back. And you know, I got to see him at RAW. He hasn’t been down here a lot because he’s been busy, but I’m thrilled. For us, it’s having him home, where he belongs. Obviously, he is always welcome here at the PC. Everybody loves having him here. It’s one of those things that, like a lot of people, it was a very nice homecoming. You know, for all of us, we get to see him, he’s one we consider an OG here [laughs], and obviously more than anything it is, that’s when the real stuff matters to us.”

“It’s great to have him here, he’s come back home, and we’re looking forward to having him down here on a regular basis. Obviously, he hasn’t had the opportunity to do that, but he’s still gotten his feet wet, but he knows obviously the invitation is always open down here, and he’s welcome anytime.”

In July 2014, William Regal usurped the on-screen role of General Manager of NXT. He also became a trainer at the WWE Performance Center after the passing of Dusty Rhodes. After a remarkable 22-year stint with WWE, Regal was released from his contract on January 5, 2022.

William Regal won’t be allowed to appear on-screen as a talent until 2024, but he will still be plenty active within WWE.
