Karl Anderson shocked the world when he returned to WWE despite still being the IWGP Never Openweight Champion. It was shocking because this was never done before. Despite being under contract with WWE, both companies were able to work out a deal that allowed Anderson to defend his title at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 against Tama Tonga.

Rocky Romero has since informed Fightful Select that the Karl Anderson-WWE-NJPW situation was shaky and stressful throughout. It was reported that Anderson planned a way for him to work NJPW Wrestle Kingdom from the point he signed with WWE and was thankful to the company for making it happen.

Romero also mentioned that he isn’t aware if WWE has asked for anything in return to allow Anderson to work Wrestle Kingdom despite being under contract with them. He also noted that if WWE ever wanted to honor Antonio Inoki, NJPW would likely oblige. He further stated that anything’s possible when asked about the possibility of WWE working with NJPW in the future.

Karl Anderson is set to defend his IWGP Never Openweight Champion against Tama Tonga this week at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17. This show will be the first time that a contracted WWE Superstar will appear on NJPW’s biggest show of the year. Stay tuned to Ringside News as we keep you updated on this story as it develops.
