WWE Main Event was started a few years ago. Although the show’s name is “Main Event,” it primarily serves as the place where the lower card talent get their television time. Wrestlers who fail to feature prominently on RAW or SmackDown are given more time on Main Event. However, recently, WWE Main Event has served a different purpose.

For the past several months, NXT Superstars have been making appearances on Main Event and competing against some of the main roster talent. Fightful Select is reporting that NXT talent is being used on Main Event to evaluate how the main roster audience reacts to them. It was also noted that the NXT talent considers it a reward to appear on WWE Main Event.

“Since the return to live crowds last year, NXT talent has regularly worked dark matches or on Main Event to help evaluate them. One NXT source indicated to us that WWE higher ups feel it gives them a more accurate reflection of how a talent would immediately connect with a main roster audience, since they’re largely working in front of the same few hundred people on weekly NXT TV.

It was reiterated to us that appearing on Main Event doesn’t mean that there’s been a pitch for a call-up or plans for one. Instead WWE is trying to get looks at talent on the road outside of the auspices of the Performance Center. Several NXT talent have told us they viewed getting looks on Main Event as a reward.”

Using NXT talent to work Main Event in front of the main roster crowd seems like a great idea. We will have to wait and see if this makes any difference once the superstars are called up to the main roster. Stay tuned to Ringside News for updates regarding main roster call-ups.
