WWE is holding another tournament, and it kicks off tonight. The winner of the tournament will receive a shot at Gunther’s Intercontinental Championship, and a World Cup is about to begin.

The tournament starting on tonight’s SmackDown. A first-round match between Nakamura and Escobar is booked for the episode. Now, we have an idea about who else we should expect.

PW Insider reports that the World Cup tournament is planned to feature Braun Strowman, Shinsuke Nakamura, Sami Zayn, Santos Escobar, Rey Mysterio, Jinder Mahal, Butch, and Ricochet. That is quite a wide range of talent.

WWE needs to make Gunther’s next challenger matter, because he is such a dominating force. Booking someone like him to maintain his strength, while capturing interest from fans, is a difficult balance.

We will have continued coverage of WWE SmackDown right here at Ringside News. Only time will tell who steps up to Gunther next, but they will have to win a World Cup Tournament to make it happen.

What’s your take on this situation with Gunther? Sound off in the comments!

I love pro wrestling and hate BS. These two things drive me. Years of experience in writing, journalism, and digging exclusive insider info for Ringside News. Worked in finance before realizing pro wrestling journalism made much less sense. Pro beachballs at pro wrestling shows, pro dives if someone catches, anti bullies, olives, and pineapples on pizza.
