Adebayo Akinfenwa had a decent career in professional soccer, where he was known for his explosive power. The 40-year-old announced his retirement from the sport in May 2022. Akinfenwa shocked everyone with his decision to join pro wrestling.

The former striker recently sat down with Cultaholic for an interview. Akinfenwa confirmed he was in talks with WWE prior to his retirement from soccer. The former AFC Wimbledon player revealed he had conversations with Triple H, but didn’t pursue wrestling at the time because of his commitment to soccer.

“There were conversations. There was truth in the conversations. My team sat down with their team. Me and Triple H had sent messages back and forth but these were times when I was 100% concentrated on football. Now I’m retired and I’ve said this, I was lucky enough to play for 22 years but now I’ve finished, I’m going to try my hand at as many different things and what lands, lands. I’m going to try and enjoy the next chapter of my life.”

Akinfenwa is finally entering the squared circle this month. The former soccer player will be making his pro wrestling debut at PROGRESS Chapter 146: They Think It’s All Over… on November 27, 2022. Akinfenwa will team up with Anthony Ogogo against Kosta Konstantino & Malik at the wrestling event.
