Cathy Kelley Had Talks With AEW Before WWE Return

Cathy Kelley’s return to WWE came as part of greater announce team shift. Jimmy Smith was taken off the air, and he departed from the company. Needless to say, this is a big change for the WWE Universe. This big pick-up of Kelley was almost Tony Khan’s.

According to Sean Sapp behind Fightful’s Paywall, AEW had talks with Cathy Kelley prior to her signing with WWE once again. These talks included speaking directly to Tony Khan about possibly working something out.

Cathy Kelley returned to WWE, with the company announcing she’s rejoining as an interviewer. Sources indicated earlier this year that Cathy had conversations with All Elite Wreslting. We’re told that included speaking to Tony Khan directly at some point about the possibility of working there, and that things actually looked promising. However, that didn’t end up happening. We haven’t learned why that was the case or what side ended up keeping it from going down, or how far talks actually got. 

It was also reported that, “Kelley and AEW remained on solid terms before she headed back to WWE.”

Stephanie McMahon and Cathy Kelley were close, and Steph even joked about bringing Kelley back the day after she left the company. With Stephanie McMahon as the new co-CEO of the company, that certainly helped grease the wheel to Cathy Kelley’s return.
