AEW and New Japan Pro-Wrestling eventually teamed up to co-produce the historic Forbidden Door event after months of hyping. AEW has provided NJPW with elite performers like Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley. Tony Khan recently revealed the challenges of sending AEW talent to NJPW for Wrestle Kingdom 17.

Many fans anticipate seeing AEW wrestlers at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 on January 4th, 2023, given the partnership’s growth over the years, which included the two companies staging their joint Forbidden Door show in June. Tony Khan recently discussed the difficulties faced by AEW stars getting to Japan for AEW All Out on Wrestling Observer Radio prior to the event.

One challenge this year that we’ll have to keep an eye on is the Tokyo Dome is on a Wednesday. That hurts you on Friday because you can keep Wednesday strong but you lose four big stars and that can hurt you on Friday. I really want to rebuild Friday. I’m not thrilled about it, but I’m gonna do my best to support them because they are our partner, but I also can’t send everyone over there. If it was the weekend, I’d send the house because that’s the kind of partners we are. It’s a really great relationship because we already have gotten to talk about that, but we have to do Dynamite and a good chance that maybe Rampage will be taped that day.

The 2020 edition of Wrestle Kingdom featured Chris Jericho, the reigning AEW Champion, taking on Hiroshi Tanahashi. The phrase “Forbidden Door” was used in the build-up to this match, when Tanahashi promised to visit AEW if he defeated Jericho. The IWGP US Title was won by Jon Moxley at the same event over Lance Archer.
