Raquel Rodriquez and Aliyah squared off against Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky in the Women’s Tag Team Championship Tournament Finals. Rodriquez and Aliyah won the match after Aliyah scored the decisive roll-up pin on Kai. It looks like WWE has got big plans in store for Rodriguez.

Dave Meltzer recently discussed Rodriguez and Aliyah’s victory on Wrestling Observer Radio. He revealed that WWE is currently pushing for Raquel to become a big star. Meltzer agreed that it is after all the right thing to do and Aliyah is tagging along to ride the wave.

They are trying to get Raquel Rodriguez as a big star. I mean that is one of the things they are trying to do right now and Aliyah is sort of along or the ride I suppose? I didn’t think the match was particularly good. I think the one thing was that they were just trying… I think this match was just to do a surprise. Nothing else. Sometimes you do that, you know? If you’re looking at like the big money vs Naomi and Banks, which team should win in that situation, I think it’s pretty clear that Kai and Sky should have done that, which is why probably a lot of people were like, ‘Why did it happen this way?’ Because if you think about it logically, it wouldn’t happen.

Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky had advanced into the tournament final after defeating the teams of Tamina Snuka and Dana Brooke and Asuka and Alexa Bliss. Raquel Rodriquez and Aliyah bested Xia Li and Shotzi Blackheart in the first round. They beat Natalya and Sonya Deville in the semifinals.

WWE’s decision to have both of them win the titles was met with criticism as well. Kai and Sky were clearly the favorites, but the result shocked everyone. WWE must have got big plans for them to go ahead with that storyline. Let’s see what’s in store for the new champions in the future.
