WWE let several members of the NXT roster go yesterday in another sweeping roster purge. Many fans found some of the moves curious, as several released wrestlers were involved in ongoing television storylines. There appears to have been a lack of communication between the top brass in WWE and the NXT creative team.

Persia Pirotta was booked in a story with Duke Hudson against Indi Hartwell and Dexter Lumis. Lumis and Persia were both released. Malcolm Bivens was managing the Diamond Mine. Bivens also had just rejected new contract in February, so there had to have been some wires crossed when they booked his recent segments.

On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about the circumstances surrounding these releases. Dave believes there had to have been a miscommunication somewhere. Otherwise, there would have been no reason to place performers who were about to be fired into on-screen stories.

“They all had storylines that were ongoing and then they were cut. Even the people involved in NXT creative… This tells you. Either it’s a communication issue because if these people were going to get cut, you would probably not want to start storylines with them as they did with Malcom Bivens in particular.”

Harland had been split from Joe Gacy as Gacy entered a main event feud with NXT Champion Bron Breakker. It appears everyone knew about that release in advance. For those who were in the current plans for television, it’s harder to believe that the NXT creative team knew.

WWE often does things that don’t make any sense. It should come as no surprise that these releases seemed so sudden and that several came mid-angle. There could be more on the way, and it will be interesting to see if those releases involve any other talent who are currently engaged in feuds on NXT TV.
