The Royal Rumble is upon us, and today’s WWE SmackDown is the go-home edition for the upcoming PPV. WWE has set of things planned for SmackDown in order to bridge the gap between now and the highly anticipated pay-per-view event.

A number of NXT superstars came to Kansas City for the go-home edition, and Tommaso Ciampa, Io Shirai, Dakota Kai, Roderick Strong and LA Knight are some standout names for the line-up. We’ll have to see if they make the broadcast, or if they were just called in for another reason.

PW Insider‘s backstage notes confirmed Ciampa’s presence at the T-Mobile Center backstage for the show. Though it’s not confirmed that the NXT stars are there for their roles in Royal Rumble, they’re mostly likely going to tape their dark matches.

Kevin Owens, who worked together with Seth Rollins last week to ban The Usos from appearing ringside to Roman Reigns at the Rumble, is also backstage for today’s event. His participation in the live show is not guaranteed, because he is a red brand Superstar. Still, you never know what can happen around the Royal Rumble.

King Woods was reported to return for today’s show. Ridge Holland is also returning. It should be a big show complete with Sonya Deville vs Naomi, if that actually does end up happening.
