All Elite Wrestling is paying tribute to their roots on the Turner family of networks on January 8, 2022. The promotion will produce a one-hour special known as Battle of the Belts. It is an homage to the classic WCW Clash of the Champions that aired on TBS many years ago. It will also feature the son of WCW legend Dusty Rhodes, who took part in many Clashes himself.

The show will air on TNT, but the intent is the same. AEW frequently holds special televised events since they only run pay-per-views quarterly. This will be their first standalone TV special that isn’t branded as a Dynamite or Rampage.

It wouldn’t be a Battle of the Belts without title matches. the company already announced that Riho will challenge Britt Baker for the Women’s World Championship. The second title match on the show will be a rematch, according to a Twitter post from AEW. Cody Rhodes will defend his newly-acquired TNT Championship against Sammy Guevara.

“After #CodyRhodes became 3x TNT Champ vs @sammyguevara Christmas night, the #SpanishGod made a New Year’s resolution to regain the Title. This Saturday LIVE @ 8pm ET/7pmCT on TNT at the inaugural Battle of the Belts, the rematch: TNT Champion Cody Rhodes defends vs Sammy Guevara!”

Cody’s championship win didn’t receive very warm reaction from AEW fans. He recently said that nobody would see what was coming as far as his current storyline. The match could have major ramifications for his character.

More matches are likely to be announced this week on AEW television. The only remaining champions without matches are World Champ Hangman Adam Page and tag team champions the Lucha Bros.

The first ever TBS Champion will be determined when Jade Cargill faces Ruby Soho on the January 5th Dynamite. Time will tell what Tony Khan has planned for the rest of the Battle of the Belts card.
