Steve Austin had a bit of pull backstage in WWE during his heyday. Nowadays Vince McMahon won’t even pick up when he calls, and that’s a shoot. There was a time when things were much different and Austin could even decide that he didn’t want to work with a Superstar, and that choice wasn’t tested.

During Grilling JR, Jim Ross revealed that Steve Austin refused to work with Marc Mero. Austin didn’t give any excuse except for “it’s just not right.” We’re not sure what that means, but Vince McMahon decided to let Austin have his way.

“He didn’t wanna work with Marc Mero. He didn’t give me a specific reason, he just felt it wasn’t right. That’s all he said, ‘It’s just not right.’ So Vince said, ‘You mean he didn’t wanna work with him?’ I said, ‘I don’t know what the deal is.’ I was on the phone with him trying to talk him off the ledge, so the decision to do these things were mine. If you’re gonna get hot at anybody, get hot at me, not Austin. My job is to keep the talent happy and productive.”

Austin and Mero also shared a locker room in WCW. Stone Cold was “Stunning” and Marc Mero was “Johnny B Badd” at the time. Perhaps this decision from the Texas Rattlesnake was one that he brought over from WCW, but he certainly felt that was in WWE.

We’re not sure why Steve Austin refused to work with Marc Mero. Perhaps he didn’t like his gimmick, or he didn’t want to work around Sable. Either way, a program between the two never took place because Stone Cold said so.
