The WWE Title changed hands a few times in recent memory. Elimination Chamber ended with The Miz cashing in the Money in the Bank briefcase and winning the WWE Title from Drew McIntyre. That celebration didn’t last long as Bobby Lashley soon won the title. There is a reason why The Miz was needed in this situation.

During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained WWE’s mindset when it came to putting the title on The Miz, if even for a very short time.

“It was a way to get the title on Lashley, that’s just what it was. They want Drew to be the challenger on the first night with fans. So, that’s the direction they went. They could have gone with someone else as a transitional champion, but the thing is when you’re a one-week champion it kinda makes you suck. So, you might as well do someone who you don’t portray as a main event guy.”

“Let’s say they put Sheamus in there, it would make Sheamus look like a complete goof; and then based on who they’ve got and who they’re pushing it pretty much, I mean if you look at that side [of the heel roster], I mean Miz had the briefcase.”

Things worked out for The Miz to take the WWE Title at Elimination Chamber and then lose it to Bobby Lashley one week later. At least The Miz got to take the title home to his family like he wanted to. Now Lashley is WWE Champion, and he is not transitional, but there already seems to be a huge opponent in store for him at the show of shows.
