During Wrestling Observer Radio, it was explained that Ricky Starks’ TNT Title match was a tryout. His performance impressed AEW executives so much that they decided on a program for him during that match and offered him a contract.

“During the match they were so impressed — this was his tryout. So I mean like the deal of — he was signed probably after the match because this was taped on Thursday of last week. But, he was — this was not like he was signed and then they debuted him… this was a tryout and midway through the match he looked so impressive that they came up with a program for him and signed him.”

AEW didn’t just sign Ricky Starks, because they already have something in mind for him. We’ll have to see what is down the line, but it was noted his signing wasn’t done just to get someone on their roster.
