Shayna Baszler and Kairi Sane threw down in hard-hitting contest at NXT TakeOver: WarGames in a 2 out of 3 falls match that saw a lot of interference from Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir. In the end, Baszler won the match and retained her title, but The Pirate Princess had some friends run down in the closing moments of the match to even up the odds.
Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that this match was simply orchestrated to tell another story down the line between six women. The 3 of the 4 Horsewomen in NXT will likely battle Sane, Io Shirai, and Dakota Kai and that was the intention of the gimmick match at WarGames.

“I know why they did a three falls match because they wanted to get interference and a couple falls and the whole idea was to build up this six-women feud with Io Shirai, Dakota Kai, and Kairi Sane so that’s kinda like the direction I guess. So I get why they took three falls for that but they really could have given them more time.”

Only time will tell how WWE ends up booking this storyline. After all, Vince McMahon could decide over his 4:00 am breakfast of steak and more steak that he wants to bring up the rest of the 4 Horsewomen to the main roster at Survivor Series and that could throw a wrench in any plans NXT has down the line.
But it seems like if the 2 out of 3 falls match had a single purpose and they pulled it off very well.
