The wrestling world lost one of it’s brightest stars when the “Mastodon” Big Van Vader passed away this week. The hardcore legend had won world championships all around the globe and was a true international icon.

Very few foreign wrestlers have managed to win the prestigious IWGP Heavyweight Championship in history. Vader is a part of this very elite group of wrestlers, having held the title on three different occasions.

Therefore, the Mastodon is considered to be a bona fide legend in New Japan Pro-wrestling and his passing had a similar impact on that side of the world.

NJPW President Harold Meij held a special ceremony to honour the soul of Vader earlier today. The ceremony was attended by some of the top names in NJPW today and a 10-gong salute was given to the legend.

Meij himself stood in the middle of an NJPW ring with a portrait of Vader in hand during the ceremony.
