Daniel Bryan knows the pro wrestling business pretty well at this point and he can read a crowd like one of the many books he consumes on a regular basis. Therefore, it was pretty clear to him that his character needed a refresher.
With Bryan turning heel during the SmackDown Live before Survivor Series, it not only changes up Brock Lesnar’s opponent, but it was also something that Bryan has been pulling for as Dave Meltzer explained on Wrestling Observer Radio.

“So it is a complicated story but Daniel Bryan himself has been pushing the idea of going heel just because his booking as a babyface with The Miz was counterproductive. It’s amazing to me that he came back in March and here we are in November and obviously, he made this choice some time back — not a long time back but weeks back — that he had to go heel.”
“So that was [Daniel’s] call, well, in the end, it was Vince’s call. So that was something that he wanted to do that had not been approved.”

Hopefully, Daniel Bryan’s reception and storylines to follow will be better as a heel. But to be honest, they have to be somewhat better already starting off as the WWE Champion. But it certainly changes up the chemistry in the champion vs champion match at Survivor Series.
