Zelina Vega isn’t mincing words when it comes to how WWE handles her character, especially when she’s playing the good guy.
The current U.S. Women’s Champion pulled back the curtain during a new episode of Lightweights Podcast, opening up about how different the crowd reacts depending on whether or not she’s allowed to speak—and she says WWE keeps her voiceless when she’s not a heel.
Vega pointed to a recent match with Chelsea Green as proof that fans do want to cheer her, but it’s only when the match is hard-hitting or emotionally charged. She argues that promos—not just physical storytelling—are key to real connection.
“Chelsea is obviously very loved… people have fallen in love with the character. And with me, it’s like—there’ll be times where I get a ton of promo time when I was a heel. But then as a babyface, I never get the mic, so people don’t get to know much about me. They don’t really get to see me as a babyface. That’s why they’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, you’re so much better as a heel.’ I’m like—it’s because you don’t hear me talk at all.”
It’s a rare moment of honesty from Vega, who’s long been one of WWE’s most versatile performers. She’s handled everything from ringside manager to singles star, and now carries a championship. But even with gold around her waist, she’s still struggling to get mic time unless she’s playing the villain.
“They don’t really get to see me as a babyface… people are judging off something they haven’t really been shown.”
The takeaway? Zelina isn’t asking for the spotlight—she’s asking for a fair shot to show fans who she is when the lights are on and the crowd is ready to cheer.
