Matt Cardona shocked WWE fans when he returned on the November 14 edition of SmackDown—but not as himself. Instead of appearing under the name he’s built over the past five years, Cardona resurrected his old WWE persona: Zack Ryder.
The return took place during the John Cena Last Time Is Now tournament, where Ryder was revealed as the surprise opponent for LA Knight. While he didn’t win, the moment was a huge deal—not just because of who showed up, but how.
Fans were quick to notice the difference. Cardona has spent years telling people “Zack Ryder is dead” and has gone on record saying he’d only return to WWE as Matt Cardona. But on Friday night, he stepped through the curtain with “WOO WOO WOO” echoing through the arena—and just like that, Zack Ryder was back.
Independent star Richard Holliday said what many were thinking when he tweeted: “I thought Zack Ryder was DEAD.”
Ryder didn’t miss a beat with his response: “He has risen.” Then he doubled down with another nod to his original character, simply posting: “WOO. WOO. WOO.”
Even though he lost to LA Knight, this SmackDown appearance marks Ryder’s first main roster WWE match in over five years. It’s also proof that, in pro wrestling, never say never—even if you’ve sworn off your old gimmick.
