WWE’s new Netflix series Unreal is causing some serious internal heat—and Bully Ray isn’t pulling any punches about why it’s a problem.
The former WWE and ECW star took to Busted Open Radio to air his frustrations about Unreal, claiming the series goes too far in exposing the inner workings of professional wrestling. According to him, it’s not just casual commentary—veterans of the business are getting vocal behind the scenes.
“Speaking about exposing the business, how about this new Netflix series?” Ray said. “I know LFG was difficult for ‘Taker.”
Ray brought up The Undertaker, revealing that the WWE Hall of Famer wasn’t exactly eager to be part of a similar behind-the-scenes show like WWE LFG. And it’s not just one legend—Ray says the old guard is starting to push back.
“A couple of veterans that have been around even longer than I have, whose opinions I respect very much, are starting to get quite vocal about the amount of the curtain that are getting pulled back and the quantity of times it gets pulled back. Eventually, we’re not going to have anything left, is the concern.”
He warns that pro wrestling runs in cycles, and when the industry inevitably has to rebuild after a downturn, there may be nothing left to rebuild on if everything has already been exposed.
“Eventually, this wave will crash because wrestling is a cycle. And then, when we have to start rebuilding again, what do we have to rebuild on if everything has been given away? What do people have to believe in anymore if we know that it’s just completely fabricated? You almost have to go back to the beginning.”
Ray compared pro wrestling to the mafia, saying there needs to be an industry-wide summit to determine how much of the “curtain” should be pulled back for public consumption. He stressed that the business needs to be protected the way it was in past generations.
CM Punk has also voiced concern over the Unreal series, reportedly saying the show “goes against everything I’ve been taught.” WWE itself appears divided, with some internally questioning how far is too far when it comes to pulling back the curtain.
