Thea Hail’s surprise title win on the December 16 episode of WWE NXT was never meant to happen — and now it looks like WWE may be planning to fix the mistake.
According to Fightful Select, WWE is already discussing a rematch between Hail and Blake Monroe following the accidental finish that saw Hail win the NXT Women’s North American Championship. While nothing is locked in yet, many expect the bout to take place at NXT New Year’s Evil.
“We're told that a rematch is already being discussed internally. Many we've spoken to expect it for NXT New Year's Evil, but that hasn't been confirmed.”
This comes after PWInsider reported that Hail’s win wasn’t in the script at all. Monroe was originally supposed to retain, but after taking a move that knocked the wind out of her, she couldn’t lift her shoulder in time during the pinfall.
Hail, still relatively early in her career, didn’t realize Monroe needed time to recover and went straight for the cover — forcing the referee to count the fall as a legitimate win.
“Since referees are instructed to call pinfalls as if they are legitimate, the referee had no choice but to count the three count.”
The confusion was so real that WWE even played Monroe’s music first, believing she had won — before abruptly switching to Hail’s theme once WWE realized their mistake.
Backstage, the botched finish led to a ton of chaos. Creative had to scramble to rewrite multiple upcoming storylines, which had been built around Monroe still being champion. And now, it looks like WWE might use NXT New Year’s Evil to officially walk back the title change and put the belt back on Monroe.
For now, Thea Hail is still the champion — but if the rematch gets the green light, her reign could end as suddenly as it began.
