WWE entering the streaming era with Netflix may seem like a massive shift for the company, but according to TJ Wilson, the move hasn’t dramatically changed how matches are put together behind the scenes.

During a conversation with Dan Marston, Wilson addressed the impact of WWE programming airing on Netflix and other streaming platforms. While some fans expected the format change to affect the way matches are structured, Wilson explained that producers are still designing matches the same way they always have.

“I don’t really think anything changed in terms of the structure of a match or designing a match. I think the only difference now is that outside of the United States everyone sees the commercial breaks. The world is watching everything. That’s probably the biggest difference.”

Wilson made it clear that the streaming shift didn’t suddenly change WWE’s creative process in the ring. Instead, the biggest adjustment is how much more of the show viewers around the world are able to see, including moments that previously occurred during commercial breaks. He also noted that WWE has already been operating in a streaming environment for years thanks to the WWE Network, meaning the company was already used to producing content for an audience that can watch entire broadcasts without interruption.

“We’ve been in the streaming world for a long time with the WWE Network, so I don’t think it really changed much in terms of how we build a match or design a match. Wrestling is always evolving though, so things can always change.”

With WWE continuing to expand its global reach through streaming platforms, fans now have more access than ever to the full presentation of the product. According to Wilson, that increased visibility hasn’t forced major changes to match structure—at least not yet—but the business is always adapting as new technologies and audiences shape the industry.

WWE’s move into the Netflix era represents one of the biggest media shifts in the company’s history, but for now, the fundamentals of how matches are created inside the ring remain largely the same.
