Before and after WrestleMania 41, WWE held several interviews with Triple H, Roman Reigns, Paul Heyman, and others. Many fans felt it was a bad PR week for WWE because of the controversial things said in those interviews, and now WWE’s internal reaction to the situation has been revealed.
During The Hump, a fan brought up how strange the PR week had been, mentioning Paul Heyman’s comments on the McAfee show, as well as what Roman Reigns and Triple H said about Donald Trump, and Heyman making deportation jokes.
Sean Ross Sapp responded by saying that these wrestlers appear on mainstream shows and get asked questions that others might not get a second chance for if they asked something similar. He was surprised by how many controversial things were said that week, noting it felt like a big change in their approach.
Sapp also gave some credit to CM Punk, who spoke out against many of the things that others had said, and noted that WWE didn’t try to fight back against that either. When he asked someone at WWE about it, they explained that they weren’t censoring anyone and were letting them speak their mind.
“They go on shows like this or do these very, very, very mainstream things, and they get asked questions that a lot of people wouldn’t be given a second interview for if they asked that. But I couldn’t believe how many things like that came out throughout the week. It has been a significant shift in all that.
Now, to give them a little bit of credit, CM Punk said virtually the opposite of literally all the things that many people took issue with. And they didn’t try to combat that either. When I asked somebody at WWE, they said, ‘Well, we’re just not censoring these people. They’re letting them speak their mind in that regard.'”
This comes after Triple H praised Donald Trump for his ability to generate heat. Paul Heyman also shocked fans when he made deportation jokes about a fan on the Pat McAfee show, while Roman Reigns also talked about how he made the right choice by voting for Donald Trump.
WWE’s recent media interviews have caused a lot of mixed reactions, showing how the company is handling free speech in public. It’s still unclear if this new “say whatever you want” style will help or hurt WWE’s image. But one thing is clear: fans are paying close attention.
