WWE’s road to WrestleMania may be heading toward a major shakeup, as the company appears to be positioning its biggest championship match as a multi-man showdown rather than a traditional one-on-one main event.
The situation became clearer after Randy Orton won the Men’s Elimination Chamber match, which normally guarantees a singles title opportunity at WrestleMania. However, WWE immediately complicated that outcome by announcing Cody Rhodes would also receive a championship opportunity, raising serious questions about the company’s long-term plan for the WrestleMania main event.
Bryan Alvarez pointed out via Wrestling Observer Radio that the booking strongly suggests WWE is building toward a bigger match involving multiple top stars instead of a straightforward singles title defense.
“CM Punk obviously won. That wasn't a surprise. And then for the, the men's chamber, Randy Orton won but Cody Rhodes is getting a championship match on Friday. So I'm sure there will be a big schmazz and we're going to end up with a multi person match at WrestleMania.”
Dave Meltzer agreed and explained that WWE’s current storyline direction makes it difficult to leave key players out of the title picture. Based on how the main event scene has developed, he believes WrestleMania will likely feature at least three or four competitors battling for the championship.
“I'm thinking a three way but maybe, maybe even a four, maybe a four.”
Meltzer then broke down why Cody Rhodes, Randy Orton, and Drew McIntyre are all likely to be included in the WrestleMania title match, given their roles in WWE’s main event scene.
“Cody's going to be in, Randy Orton's going to be in. I can't imagine Drew McIntyre not being in and then going with Cody and Randy. He's just worked too hard to not be in. So that's and been too much of a key to everything. So that's three and then Jacob Fatu would make four. But I don't see a reason to put anybody else in.”
The inclusion of Jacob Fatu would further raise the stakes and reflect WWE’s effort to elevate him into the company’s top tier. At the same time, Meltzer noted that WWE is unlikely to overcrowd the match, as adding too many competitors would weaken its importance.
“I think that any more than four now we're starting to, you know, water it down I think, I think three or four is the right number.”
WWE has used multi-man title matches at WrestleMania in the past to protect major stars while advancing multiple storylines at once, and the current situation appears to be setting up a similar outcome. With Cody Rhodes still firmly in the title picture despite Orton’s Chamber victory and Drew McIntyre deeply involved in the championship storyline, the path toward a triple threat or fatal four-way match is becoming increasingly clear.
As WrestleMania approaches, WWE’s biggest championship storyline continues to evolve, and the possibility of several of the company’s top stars colliding in one match could define the entire event.
