The masked attacker who shocked fans during the men’s War Games match at WWE Survivor Series 2025 was reportedly none other than Austin Theory — but don’t get too comfortable with that idea.
As seen during the main event, a mysterious figure in a black mask climbed into the double-ring cage and delivered a brutal curb stomp to CM Punk. Without ever revealing his face, the man exited the cage just as quickly, leaving Punk laid out and vulnerable. That allowed Bron Breakker to secure the win for his team by pinning Punk.
According to a report by Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE’s plan was to reintroduce Theory in that spot. The move wasn’t just for shock value — it was originally part of a deeper long-term strategy for The Vision faction.
“Paul Heyman had wanted to bring Theory into the Vision, largely to make him a star and to protect Breakker and Reed from having to take pins,” Meltzer explained. “He would have been in this match [War Games] had Jacob Fatu not gotten hurt, which sped up the Cody Rhodes vs. Drew McIntyre feud since they were going to be on this show originally instead of the prior show which was to be Fatu vs. McIntyre to set up this show with McIntyre winning.”
The twist? Despite Theory reportedly playing the role at Survivor Series, WWE has yet to officially unmask the attacker on television — and Meltzer says that identity could still change depending on creative direction. One name that’s reportedly off the table? Seth Rollins.
While the curb stomp may have hinted at Rollins, Meltzer shot that down. Even Theory isn’t guaranteed to be the final reveal. If WWE chooses to stretch this mystery storyline into January, there’s speculation that Chris Jericho — yes, that Chris Jericho — could be unveiled as the masked man, instantly launching him into a top-tier program in his return.
“That doesn’t mean Theory will end up being the guy under the mask when it’s revealed. It probably won’t be Rollins. If they drag it out until January, it could be Chris Jericho, which immediately gets him into a top position.”
At the end of the day, WWE may have used Austin Theory under the mask at Survivor Series, but that doesn’t mean he’s the one who’ll be unmasked. With rumors swirling about a possible Chris Jericho shocker, WWE’s playing a dangerous game of misdirection.
