WWE may have canceled its SummerSlam weekend comedy event with Tony Hinchcliffe, but that doesn’t mean the relationship is over.
According to a new update from Fightful Select, WWE is still open to working with Hinchcliffe in the future. Despite the cancellation, the company’s relationship with the comedian is said to remain positive, suggesting there’s potential for future collaboration down the line.
The “WWE Late Night Featuring Tony Hinchcliffe” event was originally scheduled for Saturday, August 2 at 11 PM ET at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey. It was set to feature a night of stand-up comedy with WWE Superstars and surprise appearances. Unlike the Roast of WrestleMania, which sparked mixed reactions backstage earlier this year, this event wasn’t being promoted as a roast.
Cody Rhodes was the only WWE name officially advertised before the event was called off. PWInsider reported that ticket sales were described as light, and a source at the venue confirmed that WWE pulled the show themselves rather than move forward with underwhelming momentum.
Internally, some in WWE weren’t too enthusiastic about the idea to begin with, and there was reportedly a sense of relief that the company wasn’t repeating the WrestleMania roast format.
Still, WWE’s willingness to keep Hinchcliffe in their orbit suggests they haven’t given up on exploring comedy-themed events entirely—even if this one didn’t go as planned.
