WWE Stars Say Netflix’s Unreal Let Them Speak Freely Without Scripted Restrictions

WWE’s Unreal docuseries on Netflix has officially landed—and according to talent who spoke with Fightful Select, it didn’t come with the kind of scripted muzzle that many fans might expect.

Several WWE stars revealed that they were surprised by how much creative freedom they had in front of the Netflix cameras. While WWE programming is normally tightly controlled with scripted promos and dialogue, this wasn’t the case with Unreal.

One talent said there weren’t any off-limits topics handed to them in advance, and they were given room to talk about what they wanted—aside from some general language restrictions. As one wrestler put it:

“We weren’t given anything that we weren’t allowed to say… and were pretty well able to talk about what topics we wanted. Outside of some general language that we kept away from.”

Another wrestler even joked that the show exposed just how casual and unfiltered the locker room usually is:

“I realized how much ‘f*ck’ is said backstage from the show.”

Despite initial concerns from behind the scenes, WWE insiders say they were pleased with how the final product turned out.

WWE’s Unreal is turning heads not just with fans—but also with the people living it. When the talent themselves are impressed by the level of honesty, it says a lot about the shift in how wrestling is being presented in the modern era.
