How WWE handles new talent signings isn’t always as structured as fans might think. While some wrestlers arrive with a clear creative direction already mapped out, others are brought in without a detailed plan and are slotted into programming as things develop.

That reality was addressed recently by Sean Ross Sapp during a Fightful Select Q&A when a reader asked whether WWE typically knows what they want to do with a wrestler before signing them or if creative direction comes later.

Sapp explained that the answer depends entirely on the situation. Some wrestlers are recruited with specific plans in mind, while others are signed first and then introduced to television while creative teams work out their direction.

“When WWE sign a wrestler, do they have an idea of what to do with the wrestler beforehand or they just figure it out after they sign him? I, you know, I hate to answer it and say all of the above, but it is all of the above.”

He went on to point out that some signings arrive without a clear path at all, noting that there have been cases where talent debuted but then quickly found themselves in creative limbo.

“For example, Royce Keys very clear that to me that they didn't have a real idea of what they wanted to do with him because it's hard for me to believe that they said, so here's what we'll do. We'll sign him, we'll debut him in January, he won't wrestle at all in February, and he'll still have a big question mark in March, right?”

Other signings are handled very differently. In some situations, WWE develops a specific plan before the talent even arrives on television.

“Danhausen, it's pretty clear they had a plan. They planned him for weeks even before his AEW deal was up. They debuted him elaborately and then in one week he got over.”

Sapp added that there are also cases where WWE signs someone and quickly puts them on television while the creative direction develops in real time.

“Then there are situations like Ricky Starks where they sign somebody. They just immediately want to put him on TV and they figure it out as they go along.”

In the end, Sapp made it clear that there is no single formula for how WWE handles new signings. Each wrestler’s situation is different, and the company can take multiple approaches depending on the performer and the timing.

“There are cases for all of those. There's no uniform way to deliver that answer. I'm sorry, I wish I could, but it is really a case by case basis.”

The explanation offers a look into how WWE’s signing process can vary from talent to talent. Some wrestlers arrive with a fully developed rollout plan, while others step into the spotlight first and let creative direction evolve afterward.

What do you think about WWE’s approach to signing new talent? Should every wrestler have a clear plan before debuting, or is it better to figure things out as they go? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
