Seth Rollins beat Roman Reigns and CM Punk to win at WrestleMania 41 after Paul Heyman betrayed Punk and Reigns, but it appears that wasn’t the original plan.
During WWE Unreal, Triple H originally wanted CM Punk to win the WrestleMania main event in a triple threat match against Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. His plan was for Paul Heyman to act like he might betray Punk during the match, maybe still helping Roman.
But in the end, Punk would fight through it, beat either Roman or Seth, and come out looking strong. Triple H also said that while telling a story in a clear, logical way is good, sometimes it becomes too predictable. When that happens, it’s important to change things up so the audience stays interested.
“I’m of the opinion that Punk should go over at WrestleMania. Is Heyman going to screw Punk over? Like, he’s in his corner but still pulling stuff for Roman? Punk should win—and not only should he win, but Heyman turning on him shouldn’t work. Punk overcomes Paul, beats Roman or Seth, whatever he’s got to do. Punk survives and thrives.
There’s always a logical road to get the story where you want it to go. But sometimes that logical road becomes predictable. And if it becomes predictable, you need to pivot.”
Another writer didn’t agree with Punk winning. They thought the ending would be better if Heyman turned on Punk and sided with Seth Rollins instead. That way, it would be revealed that Seth had been secretly controlling everything.
They felt this surprise twist would be more exciting and memorable. Breaking up Roman and Heyman’s long partnership on the biggest stage would make the moment even more powerful.
“Not seeing it? I see it, but I just hate that finish at Mania. Punk winning is great, but Heyman choosing to go with Seth and it all ending that way—that feels way more shocking. Like Seth’s been manipulating everything the whole time. Seth going over just feels like a better story to me. Roman and Heyman had such a run that breaking them apart at the main event of WrestleMania? That’s something worthy of that stage.”
While CM Punk winning would have been nice, many fans feel Seth Rollins winning thanks to Paul Heyman was the right call since it set up more storylines for the future and that’s all that matters in the end.
Which ending would you have preferred—CM Punk overcoming the odds, or Seth Rollins masterminding a shocking Heyman betrayal? Sound off in the comments.
