WWE Superstars can sometimes go through many character changes, whether it’s a full-on gimmick rebrand or simply a babyface turn. Although some Superstars can see a real change when WWE pulls the trigger on a shift, not all plans come together in the end.
Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that WWE is running Grande Americano vs. GUNTHER matches on the upcoming European tour. The pairing stands out because it puts Gunther against the man behind the mask, someone he knows very well.
Grande Americano is currently portrayed by Ludwig Kaiser, which makes these matches essentially GUNTHER versus his former ally. It’s a direction that briefly looked possible before plans shifted for the two of them.
At one point, WWE teased a move toward GUNTHER facing Kaiser, along with the idea of a GUNTHER face turn. Those discussions cooled off after Gunther needed surgery, and the concept was dropped before anything made it to television.
“At one point they were teasing that direction and a Gunther face turn, before he had surgery, but that was dropped well before Kaiser became Grande Americano when Gable got injured and Kaiser took over the role.”
The situation changed again when Chad Gable was injured. Kaiser stepped into the Grande Americano role, and that changed how the angle could be used going forward. At this point, Chad Gable is on the edge of coming back, so it’s anyone’s guess what will happen.
Now, with these matches booked in Europe, WWE is apparently revisiting a pairing that once looked off the table. Whether it leads to anything beyond the tour remains to be seen. It certainly reconnects some pieces from a previous creative direction that was cut off too short.
