Trinity Fatu (Naomi) was all set to promote her role in the upcoming film Queen of the Ring, but WWE just made a last-minute call to pull her from scheduled media appearances.
According to PWInsider.com, the move was designed to emphasize Jade Cargill’s brutal attack on Fatu at Elimination Chamber.
Cargill, who had been off TV since November after being taken out by a mystery attacker, made her return at the start of the Women’s Elimination Chamber match. Instead of entering the bout as planned, Fatu was blindsided and left laid out by Cargill, reinforcing the ongoing storyline between the two.
In Queen of the Ring, Fatu plays Ethel Johnson, a pioneer in women’s wrestling. The film tells the story of Mildred Burke, a single mother who broke barriers in the 1930s and 1950s to become wrestling’s first million-dollar female athlete. The movie stars Emily Bett Rickards as Burke, with wrestling names like AEW’s Kamille as June Byers, Britt Baker as Debbie Nichols, Toni Storm as Clara Mortensen, and Fatu as Ethel Johnson.
The film premiered at the Buffalo International Film Festival in October and is set for a March 7 theatrical release. Many are already drawing comparisons to A24’s The Iron Claw, which earned critical praise for its deep dive into the Von Erich family’s tragic story.
For now, WWE is keeping Fatu’s focus on the storyline with Cargill, but her role in Queen of the Ring is still something wrestling fans won’t want to miss.
Do you think WWE was right to pull Trinity Fatu from promoting Queen of the Ring, or should they have let her spotlight both projects? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
