WWE is shaking things up on the road to WrestleMania 42.

According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE quietly made a major change to its WrestleMania plans last week—including potentially pulling the plug on the long-rumored Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns rematch.

“WrestleMania changed on Wednesday of last week, which was when they made the decision to go with the McIntyre title win,” Meltzer revealed, suggesting the shift came immediately after WWE committed to putting the championship on Drew McIntyre.

While the final card is still being worked out, one of the biggest updates involves a potential triple threat being floated internally: Drew McIntyre vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Jacob Fatu for the WWE Championship. But even that match isn’t guaranteed to take place on the WrestleMania stage. As for Cody vs. Roman? Meltzer didn’t mince words:

“I don’t know what the new matches are, although they may be doing a three-way with McIntyre, Jacob Fatu, and Cody Rhodes,” Meltzer explained. “That may not necessarily be at Mania, but that’s kind of — that’s not even 100 percent, but I was told that that’s kind of like, it’s a possibility.”

“The Cody Rhodes/Roman Reigns thing is probably not happening.”

While the reasoning behind the pivot remains unclear, Meltzer suggested WWE might be trying to keep things unpredictable and give McIntyre momentum heading into WrestleMania season.

WrestleMania 42 is set to take place April 18 and 19, 2026 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. But with so much still in flux, fans might want to hold off on locking in their dream match predictions—because WWE clearly isn’t afraid to change course.

Do you think WWE is making the right call by pivoting away from Cody vs. Roman? Would you be into a triple threat instead? Sound off in the comments.
