Cody Rhodes is all but guaranteed a spot in the Undisputed WWE Championship match at WrestleMania 42 — but don’t expect clarity just yet on what that match will actually look like.
After earlier reports about a possible five- or six-man match for the Undisputed WWE Championship, a new update from Dave Meltzer in the February 27, 2026 Wrestling Observer Newsletter paints a very different picture. Rhodes is now considered a “virtual lock” to be involved in McIntyre’s title defense in Las Vegas. But the structure of that match is still being debated internally.
Meltzer explained that while Rhodes is firmly in the mix, the company hasn’t finalized whether it stays a singles match or becomes a Triple Threat.
“The other talk regards McIntyre’s WWE title match. It’s a virtual lock Rhodes would be involved in that. Whether it’s a singles match or a three-way with Jacob Fatu, or even more that would involve Randy Orton, Sami Zayn or others is unclear, and may not even be finalized,” Meltzer wrote. “What we have been told is that a match involving more than three people is not being talked about right now. So it is still Rhodes and if someone is added, at this point, it would only be Fatu.”
That last detail shuts down a lot of the earlier speculation. As of now, there’s no serious talk about a five-pack challenge. If anyone gets added to Rhodes vs. McIntyre, it would reportedly be Jacob Fatu — and only Fatu.
McIntyre beat Rhodes for the title in Berlin back in January, so the rematch is there. But there’s concern inside WWE that running it back straight up might feel predictable. Fatu, despite being eliminated from the Royal Rumble by Roman Reigns, has strong support internally and could shake up the dynamic at WrestleMania 42.
Ultimately, one thing seems clear: Cody Rhodes is expected to be in that WrestleMania 42 title match against Drew McIntyre. Whether Jacob Fatu joins the bout is the real question.
WrestleMania plans change all the time — and this one still feels like it could shift. So what’s the better move? Run McIntyre vs. Rhodes one more time, or throw Fatu into the mix and raise the stakes? Let us know what you think.
